Biography* | Joseph Culpepper was the son of Joseph Culpepper, Sr., and grandson of Robert Culpepper of Norfolk Co, VA. He was first mentioned in the records in Edgecombe Co., NC after his father's death in 1745 when, his mother, Martha Culpepper, was appointed his guardian. Since he was not given a choice in choosing his guardian, he was under 14 years of age, which placed his date of birth between 1731 and 1745. He moved with his family to Anson County, where he witnessed a deed on 16 Jul 1754 for Henry Walker. On 6 Sep 1760, Walter Gibson gave Joseph Culpepper 100 acres "for good will and respect" adjacent Rocky River on Spring Branch. Witnesses were John Culpepper and William Culpepper (Anson County Deed Bk 5-339). Perhaps Joseph had just gotten married, and Walter Gibson was his father-in-law. In 1763, John, Joseph, Robert, Sampson and William Culpepper were all listed as taxpayers in Anson Co., NC. On 11 Sep 1765, Joseph Culpepper sold to Edmund Lilly for £40, the 100 acres on the North side of Rocky River which Walter Gibson had given him. This was the last record found in Anson County for Joseph, and he probably moved to Wilkes County, GA, about this time. Joseph served in the Revolutionary War in Georgia. Immediately after the Revolution, Georgia acquired a large area from the Creeks and Cherokees between the Ogechee and the Oconee Rivers. From these areas, Georgia created the counties of Washington and Franklin in 1784. After a treaty was concluded with the Creek Indians, Joseph was allowed $285.60 for damages he had suffered in Georgia during 1777-1780, so he was certainly there by that date, making Joseph one of the first of his family to move to Georgia. Joseph's son Malachi stated that he was in Wilkes County in 1777 when he enlisted for service in the Revolutionary War. Joseph did not leave many records after moving to Georgia, and probably followed a trade other than farming, or was perhaps a minister. At some point Joseph moved to Morgan Co, GA. He apparently died there around or prior to 1821: "I have received your letter of the 18th and in answer have to state that on examining the papers in the cases of Joseph Culpepper and James Fray, to which you refer, it appears that they were original claimants who have died, and that the claims have been established by their sons Malakiah Culpeper and Isaac Gray--the amount awarded in each case must of course be paid to the legal representatives of Joseph Culpeper and James Gray, whose names appear on the list in your possession. The evidence in the joint case was taken before the Court of Morgan County at Sept., term 1821, and that in the latter before the Court for Gwinnett County--same term. /s/ J. C. Calhoun." On 6 Jan 1823, Joseph's son Malachi was appointed administrator of his estate, but no further records of the estate have been found. |

Joseph Culpepper of Jackson Co. GA
Male, #2254, (circa 1765 - before 6 May 1816)
Father* | Joseph Culpepper of Morgan Co. GA |
Mother* | (?) Gibson |
DNA* | Joseph has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Joseph Culpepper of Morgan Co., GA. Joseph is a son of Joseph Culpepper of Edgecombe Co., NC, the son of Robert Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, the son of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.
Research note* | Joseph's ancestry is unproven by paper records alone. The following was written before we had DNA evidence. From naming conventions in Joseph's family, particularly the use of the name Joel, he seems to have been a grandson of Joseph and Martha Culpepper of Edgecombe / Anson Counties NC. Joseph's sons Joseph, John, Sampson, and probable son-in-law William all moved to Georgia. Joseph of Jackson could not have been the son of Sampson, because Sampson had a son named Joseph Mallory Culpepper. Also, Sampson's descendants carry a unique DNA marker not found in the descendants of Joseph of Jackson. Joseph may have been a son of John Culpepper of Jones Co., GA. John's family seems to have been centered in Laurens (formerly Washington) County, GA, and not in Jackson County, but John's daughter Elizabeth may have lived in Jackson County. Joseph was probably not the son of William, because the Joseph Culpepper who died in 1785 in Montgomery County, NC, was associated with William and his sons, and was most likely William's son Joseph. That leaves Joseph of Morgan. Joseph of Morgan had a known son Malachi Culpepper, proven by an 1822 letter concerning Indian depredations, where Malachi, as Joseph of Morgan's son, inherited his claim. And there is circumstantial evidence that Malachi and Joseph of Jackson were connected. For instance, Malachi's daughter, Martha Bellah, moved west with Joseph of Jackson's sons, and attended the same church in western Alabama which was founded by members of Joseph's family. There is a descendant in Joseph's family named Malachi. And Malachi, like Joseph, left records in Jackson County, GA before moving elsewhere. While none of this constitutes proof, it is the best we have been able to come up with on the parentage of Joseph of Jackson from paper records.1

He was there by 1803, when he registered for the 1805 Land Lottery as a resident of Jackson County. In October 1803 he was chosen as a Grand Juror for the Superior Court in Jackson County. In February 1804 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Captain Hendrick's Company. In February 1805 he was appointed overseer of a road (not named) in lieu of William Dale, deceased. Joseph was in the 1807 Lottery as well. In February 1807 he resigned as Justice of the Peace in Captain Bearden's District. He also resigned as overseer of the road from William Reed's store to Dale's mill. Joseph was a juror again in February 1808, and in November 1808 he witnessed a deed from Samuel Dickson and wife Matilda to Sampson Culpepper (Jackson County Deed Bk D-153). In July 1809 Joseph was assigned to help work the road from William McCorkley's to Jefferson. Joseph died in Jackson County in 1816. His will there mentions his wife Nancy, and children Simeon, Henry, and Sally Culpepper. His wife and son Simeon, and Ambrose Yarbrough, were executors.

Leland Culpepper of Meridian, MS, contributed much of the material included here on descendants of Joseph Culpepper of Jackson County, GA, as well as records on other branches of the Culpepper family. John and Polly were both born circa 1770-1780. The WHITAKERs were in Morgan Co., GA as early as 1808 and he also paid taxes in Baldwin Co. (1809). They were on 1820 and 1830 Morgan Co., GA censuses. Biography* | Biography written in 1895, while John was still living: John F. Culpepper, Sr., Whitesburg, Carroll Co., Ga., son of Joel and Elizabeth (Whitaker) Culpepper, was born in Coweta County, Ga., May 17, 1835. His paternal grandfather, Malachi Culpepper, was one of the early settlers of Morgan county, and was a soldier in the revolutionary war. His maternal grandparents, John and Polly Whitaker (nee Holliway), were among the early settlers of Coweta county. His father was born in Morgan County, April 1, 1802, where he was reared, and lived until 1827, when he removed to Coweta county and settled in the woods. Mr. Culpepper was reared in Coweta county, and received a good common school education, earning the money himself that paid his school expenses one year. In 1855, he engaged as a clerk in a store in Carrollton, and after one year's experience "opened up" for himself, and continued in business until 1862, when he enlisted in Company B, Seventh regiment, Confederate cavalry (Capt. L. J. Smith). At the end of a year he hired a substitute, and entered into a contract with the secretary of war to gather material for the manufacture of ammunition for the armies, which contract continued until the surrender. After the war he entered mercantile life again in Newnan, Ga., and in 1877 lost everything, and went on the farm where he now lives. He made two starts in life, and failed to attain his end; but in his last undertaking, that of farming, he has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations, and rightly feels proud and exultant over his success. Mr. Culpepper was married in 1857 to Miss Epsie Boon—born in Carroll county—daughter of Jesse and Nancy (Lester) Boon, old settlers of the county. To them five children have been born—three living: Lucinda, wife of W. C. Branan; Anna, wife of T. E. Walten; and Vela. Mrs. Culpepper is a member of the Methodist church, and he is a royal arch Mason. Mr. Culpepper is a wide-awake, progressive farmer, and very much respected by all who know him.10 |
