DNA* | | The ancestry of Henry C. Culpepper of Dooly Co., GA is unknown. To help determine it, we are seeking a male Culpepper descendant to participate in our free DNA testing project. For more information, go to http://gen.culpepper.com/dna. |
Research note* | | The only direct evidence for Henry is an 1840 census record in Dooly Co., GA listing him as "H. C. Culpepper", a Male 20-30 living with a Female 15-20. Also, an 1845 GA State census record in Dooly County showing Henry C. Culpepper with four males in the household, but no males 6-16, no females, and no slaves. His first name is inferred from the fact that his probable wife, Kessiah, had a 4 year old child in the 1850 Dooly Co. census named Henry C. Culpepper. He was once thought to possibly be the son of David and Elizabeth Hogan Culpepper. However, he is not among the named minor children for whom a guardian was appointed following David's death in 1832. Of course, Henry may have been born before 1814 and therefore not a minor at David's death, but there are no unaccounted for males in the hosuehold of David in either the 1820 or 1830 censuses. More research is needed. [W.L.C.]1 |
Birth* | between 1810 and 1820 | Henry was born between 1810 and 1820. |
Marriage* | say 1840 | He married (?) Sutton say 1840. |
1840 Census* | 1 Jun 1840 | Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census on 1 Jun 1840 at Dooly Co., Georgia.2 |
Birth of Son | circa 1842 | His son Andrew Jackson Culpepper was born circa 1842 at Dooly Co., Georgia. |
Marriage* | circa 1844 | He married Kessiah Sutton circa 1844. Kessiah may have been the wife of H. C. Culpepper, but there is no proof of this. He was in the Dooly Co., GA 1840 census, but in no subsequent censuses. Note that in the 1850 Dooly Co. census, Kessiah had a child named Henry C. Culpepper. However, there is an age discrepancy which raises doubt about this. In the 1840 census, the apparent wife of H. C. Culpepper was age 15-20 (born 1820-1825), but in the 1850 census, Kessiah was age 36 (born circa 1814). Nonetheless, if she were older than her husband in 1840, and just married, then she may have lied about her age to the census taker. |
Census* | 1845 | He appeared on the census of 1845 at Dooly Co., Georgia.1 |
Birth of Son | circa 1846 | His son Henry Clay Culpepper was born circa 1846 at Dooly Co., Georgia.3 |
Death* | before 1 Jun 1850 | He died before 1 Jun 1850. |
Family 2 | Kessiah Sutton |
Marriage* | circa 1844 | He married Kessiah Sutton circa 1844. Kessiah may have been the wife of H. C. Culpepper, but there is no proof of this.
