  1. Dwight Lester Carlisle, Jr. is the son of Dwight Lester and Epsey (Jones) Carlisle. He was born and raised in Alexander City, AL. When he was growing up he remembers that most of the streets were unpaved, children walked to school and Coca-Cola was a nickel.4 As a teenager, he spent most of his time playing football, basketball or baseball with his best friends, Joe Tom Roberts and Talmon Davis.4

Dwight attended Auburn University and he planned to become an architect, but, after a quarter, he switched to engineering and, the following summer, got a job on the third shift in Russell Corporation's No. 2 Mill.4 Russell Corporation's chairman, Eugene Gwaltney, created a cooperative program that allowed management trainees to work for a quarter and attend school for a quarter and Dwight joined the program, although it took him nearly an extra year to complete his degree requirements.4 Dwight described Mr. Gwaltney as the best teacher he ever had.4

Dwight L. Carlisle, Jr. graduated from Auburn University in 1958 with a degree in textile engineering and he went to work for Russell Corporation full-time.5 His initial goal was to become a plant manager and he held various manufacturing positions, but he kept trying to learn more and more about the different parts of the company and, in 1968, was named assistant general superintendent which put him in charge of several plants.6 He was later named general superintendent and then, in 1971, vice president of manufacturing.7 In 1975, Dwight was named to Russell Corporation's board of directors and, in 1982, he became president and chief operating officer and, in 1988, he was named chief executive officer.5

During Dwight's 35 years with the company, Russell Corporation became the nation's leading manufacturer of athletic apparel and strengthened its position in the textile and apparel industries.5 Dwight described his time at Russell Corporation as a continual learning process and he attributes the success of Russell Corporation to the quality of the workforce and constant expansion or investment in new technology.4 During an average day, Dwight would start at 7:00 a.m. with a visit to a plant or construction site and go to his office about 8:30 a.m. for calls, meetings and paperwork but he tried to get in another plant visit during the afternoon and he headed home around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m.4 His favorite part of the job was solving problems.4 Investment firm A.G. Edwards reported that the ability of Russell Corporation to respond quickly to market changes and effectively utilize manufacturing capacity gave the corporation its greatest competitive advantage.4

Dwight also worked for the textile industry as a whole, serving as president of the Alabama Textile Education Foundation and serving on committees, as a director, treasurer, vice president and finally as president of the Alabama Textile Manufacturers Association (ATMA).8 He was also chairman of the board of directors of the National Knitwear Manufacturers Association and on the board of directors of the American Apparel Manufacturers Association.5

Dwight was also active in the community. He believes that improving the public education system in Alabama is critical not only to the future of Russell Corporation but will also impact Alabama's ability to attract new industry to the state.6 He served as a member of the boards of directors for Aliant, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Russell Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Program, Friends of Alabama Archives, First National Bank of Alexander City, Russell Hospital, and, in 1989, he was named Alexander City's "Man of the Year."5 He was also active at Auburn University, serving on the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council, the Advisory Committee of the School of Business and the Auburn University Research Advisory Council and, in 1989, he received the Distinguished Auburn Engineer Award and, on 11 Dec 1995, he was given an honorary doctor of science degree.5

Dwight retired from Russell Corporation in 1991.5 He is a self described history buff and he particularly enjoys reading about the founding fathers and his favorite author is William Manchester.4 Dwight and his wife, Sarah, whom he married while he was attending Auburn University, bought a home a Ireland.9
  2. Dwight Carlisle Named State Revenue Commissioner
MONTGOMERY—On Jan. 3, Governor-elect Bob Riley announced the appointment of Dwight Carlisle, former president and chief executive officer of the Alexander City-based Russell Corporation, to the post of State Revenue Commissioner, effective Jan. 20, 2003.
“Dwight Carlisle is someone who is serving for all the right reasons and personifies the kind of world-class people I promised to appoint to my cabinet,” said Riley. “He cares deeply about Alabama and is committed to helping us find solutions to the problems that plague our state. We are truly lucky to have his skills, his energies, and his experience in this important position in our administration.”
In accepting the appointment, Carlisle said he feels the Riley administration has a unique opportunity to reform how government in Montgomery operates, and he is eager to join the administration’s efforts.
We’ve all heard about the fiscal crisis that faces our state, but I believe that rather than continuing to depend on Band-Aids and one-time patches, this crisis opens the door for finding long-range solutions to our problems,” Carlisle said. “With innovative thinking and reform-minded efforts, we can move Alabama forward for our children and grandchildren.”
Carlisle began working at Russell Corporation as a cooperative education student at Auburn University and joined the company on a full-time basis after graduating with a degree in textile engineering in 1958. He joined the company’s board of directors in 1975, was named president and chief operating officer in 1982 and became president and chief executive officer in 1988.
In 1991, Carlisle retired from the company, which has 17,000 employees around the world and approximately $1.6 billion in annual sales.
He serves on the board of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Auburn Alumni Association, and the Russell Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Program. Carlisle is also a trustee of the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
The 67-year old received the Distinguished Auburn Engineer from Auburn University in 1989 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the school in 1995.
The above information was taken from a Jan. 3, 2003, news release issued by Governor-elect Bob Riley’s Transition Office.
  3. News From Governor Bob Riley February 10, 2004 REVENUE COMMISSIONER DWIGHT CARLISLE RESIGNS TO SERVE ON AUBURN UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MONTGOMERY - Gov. Bob Riley today accepted the resignation of Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Dwight Carlisle. Carlisle resigned today after being confirmed by the Alabama Senate to serve on the Auburn University Board of Trustees. "Dwight has been a valuable member of my Cabinet and has done a tremendous job of moving the Department of Revenue in the right direction," Riley said. "I am thankful for his unselfish service and know he will be a great leader for Auburn University." Assistant Commissioner Cynthia Underwood will serve as Interim Commissioner of Revenue until a replacement for Carlisle is appointed. Along with Carlisle, the Alabama Senate also confirmed Gadsden city planner Charles Ball and Fayette elementary school principal Sarah Newton to the Auburn Board of Trustees.
