Biography* | | Hoyt Kirk grew up on his father's farm between Wadley and Malone in Randolph Co., AL. Hoyt wrote:2
When I was about nine years of age, my grandfather on my mother's side came to live with us after my grandmother died.... We lived near the Tallapoosa River and up the river about two miles a big rock came out at the foot of the mountain and sloped out toward the river. This sloping rock is about fifty or sixty feet, out at the edge it is twenty five or thirty feet high and gradually slopes down the farther back it goes. Back to where the rock is about four or five feet high, a big clear spring runs out of the ground. In the summer, after we finished farming, my grandfather and I would camp under this big rock and fish. It was a wonderful place to camp, protected from storms or rain and pure clean clear water right on the river bank.
Hoyt's parents moved the family to Boaz in Marshall Co., AL in December 1923. Hoyt wrote:3
I started attending school in Boaz at Snead in January 1924 and attended until I finished at Snead in May 1927.... You spoke of Mount Vernon, we lived out off of the Mount Vernon Road. Take a right off of Mount Vernon or come down the old Boaz Highway toward Albertville less than a mile. Take the left and cross the railroad track and take a left. I plowed the fields along the side of the railroad track just before you cross what we called Slab Creek.
Hoyt added:2
I finished high school in 1927 and when I got out of college, it was during the Great Depression of the early 1930's. I finally wound up with the State of Alabama as a tax auditor until I retired December 31, 1972. I have always enjoyed as my hobbies hunting and fishing. I was president of Alabama Wildlife Federation in 1972 and 1973. I received an award from the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, D. C. in 1973 for sponsoring a clean water bill in Alabama and getting it passed in the State Legislature.
Hoyt married Flora Freeman in 1931 and he lost his wife of 51 years in January of 1983. Hoyt remarried and he wrote4 that he and his second wife, Mary, were planning to attend a session of the Alabama Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Oct 1994:
My wife served as Worthy Grand Matron and I served as Worthy Grand Patron of Alabama Grand Chapter in 1957 and 1958. We were not husband wife then. Her husband died in 1960 on a tractor in the hay field, he owned a 500 cattle farm in Perry County near Uniontown. His wife married a Methodist Minster in 1963, he and his wife visited me and my wife often while she was in a Nursing Home almost five years and the preacher died in 1980 and his widow and I married in 1983. We had been friends for 35 years. Her first and second husbands were both good friends of mine.... Back to my wife and I, we both have been active in the Order of Eastern Star for many years. She petitioned for membership before she was 18 years old and they held her application until she was age 18. She is now 82 years old, a member of Eastern Star 64 years. I have been a member 44 years, that is a total of 108 years and we both have been active all those years. I received my 50 year pin in Masonic Lodge in February 1992. We are the oldest Past Grand Matron and Past Grand Patron living in the State of Alabama, and we are both still very active. My wife has missed two Grand Chapter sessions during the 64 years she has been a member, because of sickness.
Mary Lillian (Butler) Pierce visited Hoyt and Mary and wrote:5
He was kind and soft spoken. His mind seemed sharp as a pin.... She is a beautiful woman. She is interested [in] and does arts and crafts....
Hoyt died in 1998 at the age of 90. |
