Biography* | Christopher Culpepper first appeared in Nash County, NC deed records in 1784: DB1-314: Jeremiah Deens of Nash Co. to William Andrews of Franklin Co. April 5, 1784. in the behalf of the Society of the Regular Baptist, for 50 pds. A parcel of 2 acres, it being part of a tract granted to William McGee in 1761. wit: Henry Deens, James Culpepper, Christopher Culpepper In 1796, he witnessed a deed between Richard Deens and Jesse Bass for land on Little Peach Tree Creek (Nach Co. NC Deed Bk. 6-325). This would have been not long after Christopher married Celia Moreland. The couple's son David was born in 1801. In 1803, Christopher bought 109 acres from Augustan Bass on the west side of Turkey Creek, part of a grant to Jeremiah Deens (Nash Co. Deed Bk. 7-160). Also about 1803, Christopher and Celia had a daughter, Agnes. In 1804 Christopher sold 218 acres on the south side of Turkey Creek to his brother Henry, and the land was adjacent to his late brother Jeremiah Culpepper's land (Nash Co. Deed Bk. 7-261). In Jan 1805 Christopher and his wife Saley (Celia) sold their 109 acres on the west side of Turkey Creek to Thomas Carter (Nash Co. Deed Bk. 8-74). Their son Edmund was born in February of that year. Christopher soon moved to South Carolina, as his next two sons, Jeremiah and Wilson (or William), were born in South Carolina in 1807 and 1809. The next youngest son, Henry Culpepper, born in 1813, said he was born in Nash County, NC, so perhaps Christopher moved back to NC for a while. The youngest son, John, was born in Georgia in 1815, so that was about when Christopher first moved to Georgia. No records have been found of Christopher's location in Georgia prior to 1817, when he was selected for a jury in Laurens County, GA ("Laurens Co, GA Legal Records 1807-1832," by Allen Thomas). Christopher was not in the 1820 census of Georgia, and was perhaps missed by the census taker. By 1824 he was in Jones County, GA, as the Georgia Journal, Milledgeville, noted in January 1824 that Christopher had letter waiting for him at the Clinton post office in Jones County (Genealogical Abstracts from the Georgia Journal Newspaper, 1809-1840, by Fred R. Hartz). He was also in the 1830 census in Jones County. No record has been found of his estate, if any. | |

1800 Census | 4 Aug 1800 | Jeremiah and James was probably a free white male, age 16 and under 26, in Elizabeth (?)'s household on the 1800 Census at Nash Co., North Carolina. Enumerated in census but otherwise not identified are 1 M0-10 and 2 F16-26..8 |

Probate* | Feb 1801 | Probate action was taken on Jeremiah's estate in Feb 1801 at Nash Co., North Carolina. |
Death* | 1801 | He died at Nash Co., North Carolina, in 1801. |
Research note* | That this Jeremiah was the son of James is proven by James's will, which mentions his children by name. Jeremiah's own children are more problematic as in his will (see above), he did not specify their names. The 1800 census of Nash Co. shows two listings for Jeremiah, one under his name, and the other under his wife Patience's name, both listings show four sons and a daughter, all under age ten. Of the five children, only two sons are proven. The case for William Culpepper is perhaps the strongest. In Jan 1826 William Culpepper sold 100 acres to James Harrison for $20, "land known as the land of Jeremiah Culpepper." Perhaps James Harrison was his brother-in-law, as $20 was a very good price for 100 acres (Nash Co Deed Bk 16, p.346). And William almost certainly had a brother Jeremiah. William and Jeremiah Culpepper sold land jointly in Feb 1821, to Gideon Bass on the south side of Turkey Creek (Deed Bk 10, p.233). Also, Jeremiah Culpepper sold land to William Culpepper in Oct 1841 (Deed Bk 17, p.303). It seems certain that this William and Jeremiah were the sons of the Jeremiah who died in 1800. Also, by a process of elimination, Jeremiah and Patience were the only Culpepper couple in 1800 Nash county who had at least two sons born in the 1790's, if the 1800 census is reliable. Also, it seems probable that the later Jeremiah would be the son of the earlier one. Finally, DNA testing has shown that Jeremiah Jr. and William C. Culpepper have the same genetic signature as James Culpepper except that they also share a unique mutation that must have occurred with their father Jeremiah Sr (son of James) who then passed it along to his sons.10,11 |

They had children named William, Theophilus, Cornelius, Sarah, Mae (or May), Catherine, Jemima, Isaac, John Junior, and James Henry. They later migrated to the Pike County area of Alabama where both passed away. Also, If you happen to find these folks, would you please check to find out where the "Cotton" comes from in Sarah's name. From Ken Hughey, Sep 2007: Here's the information I have assembled on the John Thomas family of 1810 Old Darlington District. The dates are from censuses or tombstones. (11) Sarah Thomas B. 1839, Troy, Pike Co., Al. ------------------------------------ Response by Lew Griffin: In my opinion, your Sarah was almost certainly the Sally Culpepper listed in the will of James Culpepper, 1799, of Nash County, NC. We currently list her in our files with an estimated date of birth of 1778. Her brother James moved to Darlington District, SC, at an early date, and so it is not surprising to find her there as well. I suspect she met and married John Thomas in either Edgecombe or Nash County, NC, or in Darlington District. This was the only early Culpepper family in Darlington District. There were no Culpeppers in early Scotland. It looks like most of the names of the children probably come from the Thomas side of the family, with the exception of the son James Henry. If I'm correct, then Sarah's father was James, and she had brothers, James and Henry, as well. She probably descends from the early Henry Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA. ... there was a Thomas family in early Edgecombe County, NC, where these Darlington Culpeppers were originally from. And the name Theophilus occurred in this family. A Theophilus Thomas in Edgecombe had a son John, for instance, who was probably in the right age range to have been yours. These Edgecombe Thomas's lived in the Toisnot Swamp area of Edgecombe, which latter became Wilson County.4 |

Biography* | David Smith wrote on 9 Oct 2006: My wife is Barbara Anne Britt and she is the great granddaughter of Mariah Elizabeth Culpepper b. Nash County, N.C., in 1823. My wife copied the records in a family bible some 50 years ago and has kept the record ever since. She does not know where the bible is to be found today. The following is the record she copied: Maria (sic) Rose the daughter of Wm & Elizabeth Culpepper was born 9th day of November 1823 Mary Ann E Watson the daughter of Archibald and Maria Rose was born the 3d day of January 1842 Martha Ann F Rose was born 28th day of September 1844 Emily Jane Rose was born the 17th day of July 1846 Lucy Ann B Rose was born the 12 day of May 1848 John William Rose - Nov. 16, 1850 Joshua Rose - April 2, 1854 James Haywood Rose - Aug. 18, 1858 Reuben Anders Rose - April 1, 1861 Note that Mary Ann E Rose (Watson) is listed by her married name. This means that the original document was not created until ca. 1860 at the earliest. Another document belonging to my wife is a 5 x 8 card with the same information on it in family tree form. However, a later added note has an arrow pointing to Mary Ann E Watson and states "Aunt Polly Ann's husband killed civ war" Reuben Anders (some records say "Andrews") Rose was my wife's grandfather. A separate Rose Family Bible, now in the possession of my wife's cousin, Sylvia Rose (Mahoney) states that "Mrs. Archibald Rose died February 1900". ...I have more info on the descendants of Mariah Culpepper, if you would like.6 |
