Union District/County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Union County was formed in 1785
from Ninety-Six District. In 1791, it became part of
Pinckney District,
and then in 1798, when the counties were abolished, it became Union
District. In 1868, Union District was designated Union County. Its
county seat, the town of Union, is on US-76, about 55 miles southwest of
Charlotte, NC, and 55 miles northwest of Columbia. Union County is
bordered by the counties of Cherokee,
York, Chester,
Fairfield,
Newberry, Laurens and
Spartanburg.
