Cherokee County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Cherokee County was formed in 1897
from Union, York and
Spartanburg Counties. Its county seat, the
town of Gaffney, is on I-95 about 40 miles northeast of Greenville and
80 miles NNW of Columbia. Cherokee County is bordered by the South
Carolina counties of York,
Union and Spartanburg, and the North
Carolina counties of Rutherford and Cleveland.
