History
In the Upper
Coastal Plains Region of Georgia,
Lowndes County was formed in 1825 from
Irwin County. Its county seat,
Valdosta, is on
I-16 about 230 miles south of Atlanta and 75 miles ENE of Tallahassee, FL. Lowndes is bordered by the Georgia counties of
Echols, Clinch.
Lanier, Berrien,
Cook and Brooks, and the Florida county of
Hamilton.
