Northwest
Georgia Culpepper Tour Route. All of the significant Culpepper places currently known in Northwest Georgia are in one
tightly clustered area to the west of Calhoun in Gordon and Floyd counties. For the benefit of anyone interested in
making a visit to this historic and picturesque area, we have a
suggested route connecting all of the places. Allow a couple of hours from
the time you exit I-75 until you return to it. The points of interest are all
listed below. |
|
Culpepper's Mill, In the northernmost tip of Floyd County in
Chattahoochee National Forest. Only the foundation (picture) remains of this mill that was once
operated by Charles William Culpepper, descendant of John and Nancy Culpepper. |
|
Culpepper Road. At one intersection, Culpepper
Road (picture) goes in all four directions! |
|
Johnston Chapel Memorial, where you will see a plaque honoring Charles William
Culpepper, (among others). |
|
West Union Church Cemetery.
At least 20 Culpeppers are buried in West Union Church Cemetery (see
picture and map and
names of the interred), including
the Coca Cola millionaire and philanthropist,
Charles Emory Culpeper,
son of the Rev. Elam Culpepper. |
|
New
Hope Baptist Church, where you will see a cornerstone plaque
honoring the Rev. Elam Culpepper (pictured below) |
Photograph taken in 1978 by James Burie
Clegg (1908-1990), a professional baseball umpire, and descendant of William Henry
Culpepper. |
The plaque at the left says:
New Hope Baptist Church
Organized 1924
Rebuilt 1972
In Memory of
Rev. Elam Culpepper
This church is at the intersection of Carpenter Road, just across
the Gordon County line in Floyd County and about 3.6 miles from West Union Church.
Presumably, Elam served this church late in his life, and perhaps was the founder. |
