Biography* | | Rufus Burney Perry was the son of Louis Marcus Spillman and Ada Brown Caroline (Flippin) Perry. He was born in Hunt Co., TX but appears to have grown up in Eskota, Fisher Co., TX. In 1915, he married Bernice Irene Raspberry. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gerald D. (Chole-Marion Schmidt) Perry preserved the following story about the marriage:("Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" (printout, May 4,1997) p. 10) When Rufus Burney Perry was in the nursing home in Brownfield, Texas, he told his grandson, Robert Perry, the story about when he and Bernice Rasberry ran away to Abilene to get married. Her father did not approve of her marrying at this time so he followed them to Abilene, Taylor County, Texas but did not arrive until after the ceremony. He asked "Are you two married?". They answered "yes" and he replied "Then its alright." Mrs. Perry continued:("Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" (printout, May 4,1997) pp. 10-11) In 1917 he and his family, along with the Rasberrys and some other people, left Fisher County, Texas for New Mexico. They were in wagons, buggies, hacks, and other horse drawn vehicles. There was one motor car in the bunch and the people in it would scout ahead & report back as to traveling conditions. When the car would get stuck then they would use some of the horses to pull it out. In New Mexico he first went to work in the Iron Mines near Silver City, but he didn't like working underground, so he quit the mines & went to work drilling water wells for the ranchers in the Black Mountains. This is where he learned to drill for water, so in 1923 he returned to Tye in Taylor County, Texas and he and his Father, L. M. went to Fort Worth & bought a Well Drilling Rig & had it shipped by railroad to Brownfield, Terry County, Texas. He said later that he thought there would be a couple of years work drilling wells for farms. He stayed in the Water Well Drilling business for most of the next 35 years. In 1931, Bernice died but Rufus Burney Perry remained active in the community. Mrs. Perry wrote:("Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" (printout, May 4,1997) p. 10) He served as Postmaster at Brownfield in the early 1930's & also served as Election Judge during National & State Elections for many years. He was an active member of the IOOF Lodge [Independent Order of Odd Fellows], serving as Secretary of the Brownfield lodge for many years. He was also a member in the Rebecca Lodge. On January 21, 1957 he married Mary Frances (Kincannon) Brookey (mother of two of his daughters-in-law). In March of 1972 while on one of their many trips they were in a wreck and Frances died of her injuries, R. B. was in the Hospital for some time but did recover from his injuries. He died in Brownfield, Terry Co., Texas on June 3, 1977 and is buried in the Old Brownfield Cemetery beside his wife Bernice (Rasberry) and his sister Gladys (Perry) Brazelton and her husband. His son-in-law Barney North is also buried there. ======================= The following if from pp. 10-11 of the "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" by Mrs. Gerald D.
