Biography* | | Louis Marcus Spillman Perry was the son of John Wesley and Martha Louisa Dickinson (Culpepper) Perry. He was born and raised in Randolph Co., AL probably to the west of Louina and what is now known as Wadley. This is where he was noted with his parents in the 1880 census records. The family is believed to have remained in Randolph Co., AL until the mid-1880's.
Louis is presumed to have accompanied his parents to Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL where Palmer W. Perry noted 3 that "their sons used 'Bucks Pocket' for hunting and fishing." There is a Bucks Pocket State Park across the DeKalb County line in Jackson Co., AL next to Guntersville Lake. A granddaughter, Mrs. B. A. (Irma Brazelton) Higgins visited the park and wrote:4
It is a lovely tiny cup in the bend of a mountain. It is a pocket all right. A spring bubbles out of the mountain & is a lovely camping area for vacationers (run by the State of Ala. parks I believe).... It is a beautiful drive thru the park and descending into the pocket.
Around 1892, Louis and his younger brother, W. E. Perry, set out for Texas.5 The brothers apparently decided to stop in Hunt Co., TX and their parents followed them there a year later.
Louis met and married Ada Flippin in Hunt Co., TX but, based on the birth locations of their children, they appear to have moved their young family to Taylor Co., TX by the early 1900's. The family also appears to have lived in Eskota, Fisher Co., TX for several years before moving back to Taylor Co., TX.
Finally, in the early 1920's, the family moved again, this time to Brownfield, Terry Co., TX. A daughter, Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett, wrote:6
Louis Perry, and his wife Ada and their five youngest children arrived in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas in a Model T Ford car, from Tye, Taylor County, Texas, on the day before Christmas Eve, 1924. Their household goods had arrived by truck the day before, but the house that they were to move into was still occupied. Their things were piled up at the wagon yard just west of the railroad depot. They had to stay with their married son Burney and his family, who had already moved to Brownfield, until they could find a house.
The sandstorms never seemed to let up that winter and spring. Their son Burney had been in Brownfield for several months drilling water wells for new settlers. They camped in a tent and traded drilling for lots and lumber to build Burney's house and he had already moved his family to Brownfield. Within about two months Louis, with the help of Burney and another son David and a carpenter or two, had a house built for his family to move into.
The neighbors across the road had a water well and shared their water with the Perry's until they could drill themselves a well. A hand pump was installed and water was pumped by hand, for the house, cow, and chickens as well as to water a garden and flowers in the yard, until a windmill was put up a year or so later. Finally an overhead tank was built and water was piped into the house. No more "totin' " water.
Meals were cooked on an coal oil cook stove and in the winter the house was heated by a little "bachelor" heater, using corncobs and coal. Kerosene lamps furnished light at night. In winter the family would sit around the heater at night and listen to stories of things that happened back in Alabama where Louis grew up and about Tennessee where Ada was raised. Their families, the Perrys and Flippins, moved to Texas about the same time and settled in Hunt County, where they later met and were married.
Summer evenings found the family out on the front porch where it was cooler (there were no fans or air conditioning in those days) singing old time religious songs that the elder Perrys remembered from earlier days.
In about 1930 the house was wired for electricity, then about 1933 Natural gas was piped in and used for cooking and heating. There were no School busses, so the children walked clear across town, about a mile, to school in the old red brick building built in 1917 that was torn down in the early 1970's....
Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry wrote:7
Louis M. Perry was an active Republican and served as Chairman of the Republican Party of Terry County for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Louis was a Blacksmith, Farmer and Merchant. He was not a tall man but was very strong. He could pick up two, one hundred pound sacks of grain by one 'ear' of each sack, from a Railroad Car, and pull the sacks over his shoulders and carry them on his back.
Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett, wrote:6
Louis and son Burney were busy drilling water wells for people who were settling up the country. Later Burney's sons, Dick, Floyd and Gerald joined their father and grandfather in the drilling business. In the early 1940's Louis retired from active drilling, but continued to 'get the jobs' and do the collecting for the jobs when they were finished. The "boys" went into the Armed Services during and shortly after WWII, and after the war, Dick and Floyd continued the drilling and water pump installation business until the early 1960's.
Louis and Ada decided they wanted to farm again, so they bought a small farm North of Brownfield. They built a small house, adequate for their needs, and had the boys drill them a well and install a windmill. The first year they raised and sold watermelons. The next year they decided to try grain sorghum and cotton. Louis was out hoeing some young cotton when he had a stroke and died....
He was 78 years old. |

Biography* | | Marriage note: The marriage was recorded in the L. M. Perry family Bible: L. M. Perry and Ada B. Flippin were married January 5th 1896 by the Revd L. A. Clifton at Countyline Church Hunt County Texas. A daughter, Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett, wrote:(notes included in Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" printout May 4, 1997) Ada Brown Caroline Flippin came to Hunt County, Texas, with her parents, at the age of 13, from Gibson County, Tennessee, near Trezevant.... Louis and Ada met and married in the County Line Church in Hunt County on January 5, 1896. Based on the birth locations of their children, Louis and Ada appear to have moved their young family to Taylor Co., TX by the early 1900's and then moved to Eskota, Fisher Co., TX and back to Taylor Co., TX before moving in the early 1920's to Brownfield, Terry Co., TX. Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett wrote:(notes included in Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" printout May 4, 1997) Ada loved to piece quilts and quilt them by hand. She gave most of them to her children, grandchildren and friends. Once in awhile she would sell one. She made Lye Soap to do her own laundry and would give some to her neighbors. She made the soap outdoors in a big black iron pot with a fire built under and would stand and stir the mixture of Lye and grease until it thickened, which took almost all day. She would let it cool and set until it hardened, then cut it up in large chunks. Ada was a Presbyterian(Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett letter 4 Jan 1979) and Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett noted:(notes included in Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" printout May 4, 1997) [The Perry family] attended Sunday School and Church every Sunday morning at the little white Presbyterian Church which stood on the corner of Broadway and South Third Street. In the summer when the weeds got bad in the church yard, the families would go in the late afternoon on a set day, take their hoes, rakes and picnic lunches to clean off the church grounds and have an old time picnic. In later years one of the Women's Circles of the Presbyterian Church was named The Ada Perry Circle in her honor. In the Fall when the frost and freeze killed all the green leaves and the cotton fields were really white with cotton, Ada saw that all the family was out in the field, on Saturdays and school holidays. with their cotton sacks on, pulling cotton. Sometimes she would keep the children out of school a few days, every now and then, so they could pull enough cotton to help buy their winter school clothes.... Louis had worked with his son, Burney, drilling water wells but in the late 1940's, Louis and Ada decided that they wanted to farm again and bought a farm north of Brownfield.(Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett notes included in Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" printout May 4, 1997) After Louis died, Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett, wrote:(notes included in Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry "Descendants of Martha Lee Culpepper" printout May 4, 1997) Ada stayed on the farm and saw the crop made and harvested, then decided to move her house into town, near the old home house and rent out the farm. Since she had never learned to drive a car, she thought it best that she move back close to her daughter, Kathleen Pickett, and also close enough for her to walk to town if she needed to. During the harvest season, after all her children were gone and starting families of their own, Ada would go to the cotton fields with friends and neighbors to help with the cotton harvest. She could out-pull almost anybody in the field and she pulled cotton every harvest until she was 85 years old. She loved it! She enjoyed working and being independent. She felt better when she was working and her health was good until she couldn't see well enough and had to stay inside most of the time. She had mini-strokes but was able to stay in her own home except for about 6 weeks that she spent in a nursing home. She was able to return to her home, until she had a severe stroke and lived about two and one-half weeks. She was 88 years old when her Maker called her home. =============================== Mrs. Gerald D. (Chloe-Marion Schmidt) Perry wrote (letter 1998) that Ada Brown Caroline Flippin came to Hunt Co., Texas, with her parents, at the age of 13, from Gibson County, Tennessee, near Trezevant. According to Mrs. A. T. (Kathleen Perry) Pickett, (letter 4 Jan 1979) Ada was a Presbyterian. Ada met her future husband in Texas and their marriage was recorded in the L. M. Perry family Bible: L. M. Perry and Ada B. Flippin were married January 5th 1896 by the Revd L. A. Clifton at Countyline Church Hunt County Texas. |

Biography* | | Dr. Malcolm Oliver Perry was the son of John Wesley and Martha Louisa Dickinson (Culpepper) Perry. He was born and spent his early childhood in Randolph Co., AL probably to the west of Louina and what is now known as Wadley. This is where he was noted with his parents in the 1880 census records.
The family is believed to have remained in Randolph Co., AL until the mid-1880's when Malcolm O. Perry would have accompanied his parents to Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL. The family tradition is that, when the family was there, the brothers went hunting and fishing at "Bucks Pocket."5 There is a Bucks Pocket State Park across the DeKalb County line in Jackson Co., AL next to Guntersville Lake.
When he was 17 year old,6 Malcolm O. Perry again moved with his parents, this time to Hunt Co., TX where he was noted in the 1900 census records. He attended Westminster College in Collin Co., TX and received his medical training at Fort Worth University and Tulane University in New Orleans, LA.6
Dr. Perry set up practice in the Parker community in Collin Co., TX but later moved to Allen. In 1905, he married Mary Belle Cannon and they settled down to raise their family in Allen, Collin Co., TX.
In 1947, Dr. Perry lost his wife of 41 years. In the late 1940's, the citizens of Allen gave a birthday party for Dr. Perry at the Allen gym to honor his years of service to the community.6
Mrs. Leo (Minnie B. Perry) Haney wrote:7
Dad, Dr. M. O. Perry... was a wonderful, dedicated, great man loved by all who knew him. He was the last "country" Dr. in Allen, Collin Co., Texas and practiced there for 52 years.... When Dad died... the church (Methodist) would not begin to hold the people - they came from far and wide - It took more than 2 hours for his friends to pass by the 'bier.' It was a great loss to the poor, needy & sick as he served all regardless of their circumstances....
Dr. Perry was a member of the Phi Chi medical fraternity and was a Mason.6 He was 75 years old when he died. |
