Mrs. Culpepper was born December 3, 1914 in Ft. Gaines, GA, the daughter of Francis Marion Weston and Mary Lou Killingsworth Weston. She was a member of East Highland United Methodist Church where she kept the nursery for 44 years. She was also active in the UMW and was a former Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Culpepper was the widow of Edward Thomas Culpepper, Sr.
Survivors include her son, Edward T. Culpepper, Jr. of Pine Mountain; two daughters, Mary Ann Wall of Cuthbert, GA, Frances Marion Mabry and her husband, Dathan of Pine Mountain; three grandchildren, Dathan Dean Mabry, Jr. and his wife Amy of Pine Mountain, Thomas Ward Mabry and his wife, Shannah of Fortson, Wayne Harold Wall of Cuthbert; four great grandchildren, Aria Lane Mabry, Isabella Lyric Mabry, Leileighana Grace Mabry and Aston Blayze Mabry.

PHENIX CITY, AL. Mrs. Ruth C. Ingram, 93, of Phenix City, died Monday, Jan. 10 at her residence. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 in the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum of Parkhill Cemetery, with Dr. Buddy Cooper officiating, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus. Visitation will be held 1:00 Wednesday at the Chapel of the Pines. Mrs. Ingram was born on Sept. 18, 1911 in Junction City, Ga., to the late Mittie Kellum Culpepper and the late James Culpepper. Mrs. Ingram was a retired Executive Secretary for Monroe Calculating Machine Company. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and an active member of the McTier Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Ingram and a son, C. Norman Ingram. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra and husband Jimmy Cross of Phenix City; one daughter-in-law Kae Ingram of Tallahassee, Fla; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren. Mrs. Dawkins was born March 4, 1921 in Talbot County, daughter of the late Clifford Roy and Allie Lucille Sullivan Culpepper. She was a medical assistant for Dr. Waverly Dashiell, a member of the Muscogee County Medical Assistants, Muscogee County Chapter of ABWA, Wynnbrook Baptist Church, and former member of the McClaskey Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. Mrs. Dawkins was the widow of William I. "Bill" Dawkins. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Dawkins Lassiter and son-in-law, Darrell (Skip) Lassiter of Columbus; three grandchildren, Paige Lassiter Adams and husband Mike, Darrell C. Two Columbus men and one in Talbotton men have been killed in action in Korea and another wounded, the Defense Department announced today. Reported killed were Sgt. 1-C Fred J. Daily, husband of Mrs. Dorothy Dailey, 3231 Ninth avenue; Sgt. 1-C Edward Jones, 21 husband of Mrs. Hazel Jones, 724 Benning Drive; Pvt. Ray (Roy) Knox Culpepper, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Culpepper Of Talbotton.
Pvt. Culpepper received his basic training at Fort Jackson. S. C. and was attached to Company A. Sixth Med. Tank battalion at Camp Hood, Tex. He left the Texas camp July 18 for overseas duty. Survivors other than his parent are four sisters, Mrs. W. I. Dawkins, Mrs. J. M. Waller, Columbus; Mrs. Romeo Renaud, Talbotton and Mrs. Gilbert A. Olsen, Edenton, N. C; eight nieces and four nephews... (article gives biographical info on all)

PFC ROY K. CULPEPPER PAID HIGHEST TRIBUTE
"Home they brought our soldier dead", and on Sunday afternoon, September 9th 1951 after a year of suspense and waiting Pfc. Roy Knox Culpepper was honored, with all that a grateful country and loving hearts could bestow. Many flowers from the American Legion, Auxiliary, friends and loved ones added beauty and fragrance.
Killed in action on the battlefield of Korea in September 1950. Roy Knox Culpepper gave his all for mother, home, his country and his God.
Son of Clifford Roy and Lucile Sullivan formerly of Fort Valley; name sake of his father and an uncle Roy Knox, he was born in the ancestral home of his revered grandparents the late William Culpepper and Ellen Biggs.
In April 1951, Roy Knox would have been seventeen. He attended the Talbot County School, where he made many friends among teachers and classmates. Fired with patriotism, young Roy Knox early began to plan enlistment in the service of the U. S. A. no persuasion influenced him and was allowed to go. He went, he saw, he conquered, for he was a lad but in the month that followed , he became a man.
The remains arrived in Talbotton Saturday, Sept. 8th, under a military escort and was met by friends and loved ones and taken in charge by Talbotton Funeral Home. Grave side services were held in Culpepper Cemetery where rest generations of this well known family and by the side of the adored young brother Billy, whom Roy Knox grieved so much.
A great crowd gathered to pay tribute to Pfc. Roy Knox Culpepper homage. There was Col. John McCarthy, allied member of the family; veteran of various wars, young and old, holding to memory some dearly remembered act of this high spirited loveable young lad.
The "Vacant Chair" and "Asleep in Jesus" were sung with pathos and tenderness by a male quartette, composed of Messrs J. Hamp Mahone, R. H. Jordan, R. H. McRae and Dr. C. L. Watkins.
Rev. E. G. Hutchings pastor of Talbotton Methodist Church read a number of comforting passages, several selected from Psalms and John. Never has anything more beautiful, more tenderly soothing, than the oration of Rev. Theo Pharr. Reading the U. S governments citation concerning Pfc. Roy Knox Culpepper service to his country, Rev. Pharr, with understanding heart and tear dimmed sympathy, led his hearers through and appreciation of courage, bravery and comfort that could come only from one in time with the Infinite; there was an eloquence powerful and convincing. It was from the heart to the heart Rev. Pharr's noble salute to one who "had fought the fight and finished his course", met response in every heart.
Following Rev. Pharr, military Escort, Sgt. J. Coniglie, Det. No. 5, B. A. B. of Fort Benning assisted Edward Smith, reverently folded the U. S. flag, draping the catafalque and presented it to the young hero's mother, Mrs. Clifford Culpepper as if to say:
Soldier rest! thy warfare o'er
Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking
Dream of battlefields no more.
Dream of danger, nights of walking.
A beautiful sentiment observed in the selection his schoolmates as pall bearers who were: Hamp Morgan, Bily Gibson, Merrill Calhoun, Buddy Taylor, Wayne Buchannan and Joe Hendricks of Woodland. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Culpepper and four sisters; Mrs Romeo Renaurd, Talbotton; Mrs William Dawkins and Mrs. Joe Waller of Columbus, Mrs. Allene Olson of Norfolk, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

MACON - Louise "Sissy" Culpepper, 104, of Macon, died Sunday, June 29, 2003. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 2P.M., at Bellevue Baptist Church with the Dr. Neal Wall officiating. Burial will be in the Sunshine Methodist Church Cemetery, Round Oak, GA. Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2003, from 6:00 until 8:00P.M. at Hart's Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Bellevue Baptist Church, 305 Napier Avenue, Macon, GA 31204. -Miss Culpepper was born in Jones County and moved to Macon in 1918. She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery for 40 years. Miss Culpepper was a member of the Emma Brice Sunday School Class, W.M.U. and the Keenage Club. She was a retired Southern Bell telephone clerk and was a member of the Telephone pioneers. Miss Culpepper was the daughter of the late Edmond and Minnie Childs Culpepper. -Survivors: seven nieces, Peggy Fowler and Edna Murphy of Jones County, Jane Gordon of Warner Robins, Margie Barrington of Rex, Kitty Ward of Jonesboro, Ruth Coffer of Chicago, IL; Marie Hillman of Orford, New Hampshire; two nephews, Frank Malone and Marvin Malone of Jones County; 15 great nephews, 23 great nieces, 30 great great nephews, 30 great great nieces and 3 great great great nephews. -Hart's Mortuary has charge of arrangements.8 |
