Obituary* | 27 Dec 2012 | Glenda Strawser Menzies was born Nov. 8, 1938, and passed away Dec. 20.
The daughter of Earl Weston Strawser and Nina J. Lewis, Glenda had a life of adventure almost as soon as she was born, moving all over California with her parents and even becoming the toddler mascot of a silver mine in Nevada. She was an avid horsewoman who loved and cared for all living things. She taught her children to regard all people as their brothers and sisters and support the civil rights which were her passion.
A fan of Mahalia Jackson's gospel and The Platters' rhythm and blues, she loved to sing, like her songwriter dad, and performed with the Sweet Adelines. She was a life-long resident of California who enjoyed anything to do with history, for years she was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and took a more than passing interest in her family's long American heritage, from Pennsylvania Germans to Mayflower Pilgrims to cotton planters in the deep south. She was especially proud of her southern great-great-grandfather who crossed enemy lines to fight for the Union Army and an end to slavery. She was a mother and a friend to her family and to many others. She was brave, funny, protective, open minded, kind hearted. Mom was everything.
Mrs. Menzies was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gordon Earl Strawser.
Glenda is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ronald Menzies of Mariposa; daughter, Ronda Menzies of Mariposa; son, Sean William Menzies of Burbank; son and son-in-law, Grant and Les Hayter-Menzies of Sidney, British Columbia; nephews, Duane Earl Strawser of Grass Valley, Robert John Menzies of Portland, ME and Scott Menzies of Fort Bragg; nieces, Alisa Ann Ellenburg of Greeneville, SC, Robyn Menzies Porter of Merced, and Marlene Strawser Shumaker of Upper Sandusky, OH; and sisters-in-law, Jennie Verley of Mariposa, Joanne Beeson Fleetwood of West Columbia, SC and Posie Sutton-Lieder of Tollhouse.
A celebration of Glenda's extraordinary life will take place in the spring. Instead of flowers, donors are asked to make a donation in Glenda's name to the animal rescue charity of their choice.2 |

Biography* | | Cathy Culpeper wrote on 23 Mar 2010: "According to genealogical information retrieved in England by a genealogy researcher hired by Ernest Culpeper, the first known Culpeper in India was Edmund Culpeper, father of Charles. Edmund had been a member of the army of the British East India Company, which was headquartered in Madras. Edmund would have arrived around the middle of the 18th century. In 1757 he married Joanna, a native woman. "Madras had been developed by the East India Company in the 17th century as a British naval base, and port. But by the 18th century, a small army was also quartered in Madras. This army eventually was headed by Robert Clive and became the military instrument by which the British gained ascendency in India, battling the French and eventually gaining commercial and political control of India by installing friendly local rulers. "It was the custom to encourage a number of these army men to remain in India, instead of returning to England, and economic and employment incentives were offered. Often they retired from the army to take on the work of supply and services to the army, sometimes marrying Indian women who had become members of the Church of England through conversion. In this way, families like the Culpeper's established roots in India and maintained strong connections to the army in Madras and after 1858 to the British Raj, when the East India Company was dissolved and the Raj established."1 |
