| Biography* | 1977 | MARY NANCY MONEY CULPEPPER If you were living in Abbeville in or before 1954 - that is, before we had the dial telephone system -- when we had to call the operator to get the number we wanted, you would remember her by her calm voice, when she asked, "Number please? Mary Nancy has been working for the telephone company for 23 years. When she began, there were only 287 customers to be served; today there are 1657 -- with applications practically every day for telephones to be installed. She liked the switchboard system because there was never a dull moment with the lights flashing all the time for service. The most nerve racking experience she had at the switchboard came when World War II came to an end-- when EVERY light on the board kept flashing for days!! Back then the operator was responsible for blowing the siren for every fire in the area. Her work now -- since we have the dial system, is merely routine -- mostly bookwork. Mary Nancy's parents were John Lewis and Lizzie Fletcher Money. They had eight children (she was the 4th), 4 boys and 4 girls. She was born in Headland in 1909 -- a native and life-time resident of Henry County. When she was about two, the family moved to Abbeville into the house known as the Stokes' Place, which is owned now by the Verbie Messicks. Her father did extensive farming at that time and the children did practically all the farm work with very little hired help -- also helped with the housework. She attended grammar school at the Old Zion rural school when the school terms were never over six months. Students had to go to the woods to get the wood that was used to keep the building warm; the water which they drank was brought from a spring. She attended high school in Abbeville. Oh! But what fun the children had back then when the schools had box-suppers to raise funds to buy school equipment. The girls carried beautifully decorated boxes of food. Each boy would bid on, and buy (if he had the cash) the box of his favorite girl. Beauty contests were popular at these box suppers - - the winner would possibly get a home-baked cake for a prize. They never lacked for recreation when Mary Nancy was growing up; each child would work fast to get through with his chores so that he could go swimming in the creek, play ball, ride horse or mule-back. At night there were peanut shellings, candy pullings, cane grindings, and various forms of entertainment. At 17, she was married to Bertram Culpepper, a native of Henry County. The Culpeppers had two children; Joe Burt, who has served as clerk of the Reserve Unit here in Abbeville since he came out of the Army in 1949; Jane, Mrs. Billy Scott Lindsay, Abbeville. Mr. Culpepper died in 1957. Mrs. Culpepper was one of the 80 or 82 charter members of the Calvary Baptist Mission, which is now a wide-awake church in Abbeville. She is now a teacher of an adult S. S. Class; served for several years as department Superintendent; was president of the WMU for 2 years -- is now Vice President -- and also Y.W.A.-Director. She hopes to retire in two years so that she can have a little time to call her own. Right now, with six grandchildren, a mother, and a church -- all needing her, there is no time to spare!2 |

Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in the church sanctuary. Mrs. Lindsay was a lifelong resident of Abbeville, daughter of the late Joseph Bertram Culpepper and Mary Nancy Money Culpepper. She was a 1949 graduate of Abbeville High School. Mrs. Lindsay was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church where she served as the church clerk for many years. She was a member of the Elaine Brown Sunday School Class, the W.M.U., served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Jewel Club and was a member of the Joy Club. Mrs. Lindsay and her late husband served in the Primary Department of the Calvary Baptist Church for many years. She retired from the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service after twenty-eight years employment. Mrs. Lindsay was an avid bridge player a former member of the Porch House Bridge Club and several bridge clubs in Abbeville and Dothan. I n earlier years, she was a member of the 70’s Southland Bank Travel Club. Mrs. Lindsay and her late husband were avid Auburn fans. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Scott Lindsay and a brother, Joseph Bertram Culpepper, Jr. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Nan Armstrong (Lawton Ed), Abbeville; two sons, William Scott Lindsay, Jr; and Herbert Warren Lindsay, Moody, AL; five grandchildren, Jason Selva (Dawn), Lindsay McDaniel, Ashleigh Lindsay Weems (Jason), Joseph Armstrong and Allison Lindsay; eight great-grandchildren, William Wise, Andrew Norton, Murphy Selva, Ellie Jae Weems, Jase Selva, Madilyn McDaniel, Makenzi McDaniel and Logan Blalock; a special cousin, Annie Ruth Hubbard Archibald; two nieces, Cathy McNeal (Mike) and Cindy Volf (Gene), a nephew, Bert Culpepper; several great-nieces and great-nephews. Serving as active pallbearers will be Jason Selva, Joseph Armstrong, Jason Weems, Bert Culpepper, Wayne Scott, Lawton Ed Armstrong and Bill Roberts. | Biography* | Eddie Hickland and Valentine Culpepper Hall My father, Eddie Hickland Hall, was born 11-11-1894 in Henry County Alabama to Oberia Barnes Dukes and Robert Fowler Hall. He died 7-29-1980 in a Dothan hospital. He married Valentine Culpepper b.2-14-1903, daughter of Robert Lee and Eudora Arrington Culpepper of Henry County Alabama 9-05-1921. Valentine Hall died 11-12-1988 in the Abbeville Nursing Home. Eddie Hall served in World War I and was a politician. He did farm at times to supplement his income from his political elected office as Clerk of the Circuit Court in Henry County. My father was involved in politics in one form or another for a large part of his 85 years. When he wasn't campaigning for himself; he was campaigning for someone else. He served as Henry County circuit clerk for a total of 36 years and as register for another six years for a total of 42 years. He remembered serving as circuit clerk when they got about $ 1,000 a year. He said, "I plowed two mules in the daytime, then shaved and dressed and went up there and worked at night". My father was first elected clerk in 1922. After serving six years, he went into the banking business for about three years. He lost his job and "got turned out into the world without a dime during the Great Depression." At this time my parents returned to the Hall farm in the Barnes community. They moved into the log house built by his grandfather, Reuben Hicklin Hall, in 1845. The family moved to Baldwin County for a short while before returning to Abbeville. He ran for clerk again in 1935 and was elected. He stayed in that position until 1965. My mother, Vallie, as she was called was a homemaker and enjoyed visiting the sick and shut-ins. She was a good cook and known for her "Chicken Pie" and pound cake. She never knew whom my father might bring home with him for a meal or to stay overnight. Vallie was a clean housekeeper. We scrubbed the wood floors with a corn shuck mop and homemade lye soap. Sunning the mattresses and pillows was done often on the table built outside for this purpose. Our Saturday job was to sweep the yards and even under the house. No grass was allowed to grow in the yards. Our other chores included pumping water for the house and washing clothes, chopping wood for the stove and fireplaces, and milking the cows. To the union of Ed and Vallie were born six children: Robbie Lee Hall b.8-13-1922, d.8-30-1993; Roy Herschel Hall ; Edward Hall ; Vallie Wilson Hall ; Hannon Fowler Hall b.5-13-1932, d.2-18-1998; Mary Margaret Hall . | Obituary* | 18 Jul 2005 | FLORENCE - William B. Culpeper, 76, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Florence Memorial Gardens. Mr. Culpeper was born in Darlington County, son of Walter Lee and Tedie Gainey Culpeper. He served his country with the United States Army and was an auto mechanic. Mr. Culpeper enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He was a member of Community Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary K. Culpeper; four sons, William (Terri) Culpeper Jr., Gregory Culpeper, William Joseph Culpeper and Richard Culpeper; four daughters, Patricia C. Sturgeon, Susan C. Reed , Barbara C. Wilson and Lori Culpeper; grandchildren, Tanisha, Tra Lynn, McIver, Dale, Pete, Jennifer, Gregory Jr., Brittany, LesLee, Amy, Eric, Danny and Gene; six great-grandchildren, William, Bryan, Owen, Hannah, R.J. and Abby; one brother, Charles Culpeper; and four sisters, Audrey Rothman, Hazel Byrd, Betty Ann Wallace and Glenda Blount. Memorials may be made to Community Free Will Baptist Church, 108 Clark Rd., Florence, SC 29501.2 |
