A little background on Christmas at our house: We all get up on Christmas morning and open gifts at home. About 10:00 we all go to Mom's house and have homemade sausage and biscuits, orange juice and coffee. Ted would then read the Christmas story from the Bible. After that we start opening gifts.We usually have 35relativesthere on Christmas morning.

The story on the shirts: I showed up Christmas morning wearing my "Mom likes me best" shirt. I took a lot of flack from my siblings over that! As gifts were being opened, they found out that I had bought matching shirts for them also. We had some good laughs.

Obituary*23 Mar 2009 Teddy Lee Culpepper of Upland died March 22, 2009 at home in the company of his family and friends.
     He was born Oct. 26, 1945 in Burbank, Calif., but lived in Upland for most of his life. He was a 1963 graduate of Upland High School and later attended Chaffey College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967 as a Specialist 4. He earned a National Defense Service Med al, Good Conduct Medal and was an expert Rifle during his service.
     Ted worked for GTE/Verizon for 39 years and earned numerous employee service awards. He held strong religious faith for all of his life and served on the worship team for Sunrise Church and choir director for Upland First Baptist Church. Ted loved sports, especially baseball and softball. He coached both of his sons in baseball and soccer, and for many years played a solid game in recreation and church league softball. He was at most of the grandkids' games as well, cheering them on the sidelines always eager to lend a helping hand.
     He was afflicted by cancer a number of years ago, valiantly battling it with his personal strength and his faith in God. He participated in a clinical trial, the results of which may help find a cure for those similarly afflicted in the future.
     Ted is survived by his wife, Cheryl; mother Lorene; sons Aaron and Brandon, sisters Nelda, Sheila and Lorinda; daughter-in-law Mimi; and grandchildren Sydney and Christian.
     Visitation will be tonight, March 25, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Draper Mortuary, 811 N. Mountain Ave., Ontario. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 26,at 10:30 a.m. at Sunrise Church, 1355 W. 5th St., Ontario In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation to the American Cancer Society. www.cancer.org or American Cancer Society P.O. There were between 300 and 400 people at the funeral today. They set up 280 chairs in the church and there were people standing on the two outside aisles and the foyer was completely full. One man had met Ted one time and had only spent one hour with him but he thought so much of Ted he had to come to the funeral. The pastor told the people Ted is definitely in a better place and we would be seeing him again some day.

Mom (age 92)told stories about Ted as a young child. One time the family was out working in the yard. Ted disappeared. They all went looking for him, including neighbors. They were ready to call the police but Mom checked inside the house first. Ted was sitting on the table in the breakfast nook eating butter!

When a little older, Ted and his two friends would play baseball in Joe Kotwica's front yard. Occasionally the ball would roll over into a neighbor lady's front yard. She had told them before that if the ball came over there again she would call the police. Well...it went over there again. The two Joe's and Ted came running across the street, into our house and down behind the sofa. They would take turns peeking over the sofa to see if the police were coming to get them. Joe Spillane finished the story for me last night at the viewing. He said"Wegot the neighbor lady back though! We cut both end off an ink pen then we jammed each end into a potato. When we shoved the potato in one end, the other end came flying out and stuck into her screens. She must have spent hours picking potatoes out of her screens!"

Another time Dad and a friend were siphoning gas out of the car to put in the lawnmower. Ted wanted to try it so Lloyd told him, "Just suck on the end of the hose and when you hear it coming, put it in the lawnmower." Ted didn't hear it coming. He got a mouthful of gas. He asked what would happen to him. Lloyd told him pretty soon he would start running around in circles until he ran out of gas then he would just fall over in the driveway.

After Mom told these stories and the pastor went back up on the stage he said, "Well, after these stories about Ted, maybe we won't be seeinghim again!" There were several big laughs during the service.4 
Biography* If anyone ever cared, really cared for someone else it would have to be Teddy Lee Culpepper. He was a warm hearted and well liked individual, and these wonderful traits came easily to him because he was such a sociable and amiable person, someone who was always making certain that those around him had whatever they needed. Teddy was a talkative person who was tactful at all times but typically said what he meant.

Teddy was born at Burbank Hospital in Burbank, California. He was the son of Paul and Lorene Culpepper. Teddy was raised in Upland, California. During his childhood he learned to be reliable and respectful. Teddy was an obedient child who wanted to win the favor of others. He found it easy to show sympathy and to perform kind acts for others. These admirable qualities would become a part of Teddy's personality throughout his life.

Though Teddy was frequently the one to initiate games and activities with his family, he was also quite often the family member who took the role of referee. Teddy was a peace-maker with an ability to resolve all sorts of family conflicts. In fact, Teddy worked conscientiously to keep those typical family spats at bay. Teddy was raised with three siblings. He had two older sisters, Nelda and Sheila, and one younger sister, Lorinda. Teddy and his siblings had the typical rivalries while growing up, but they cared deeply for one another.

As someone who reveled in the sheer joy of his experiences, Teddy was always enthusiastic about new adventures. Although he had an exacting nature, Teddy was always tactful. One thing Teddy will certainly be remembered for is that, when he got up in the mornings, he was ready and raring to go. As a young boy, Teddy had a number of interests and was an active child. Teddy took part in baseball and he was a boy scout. In his spare time he liked comic books, baseball cards, playing the guitar, riding horses and playing cowboys.

For Teddy, the school routines were never a problem although he generally preferred variety to structure. He seemed to be able to start a project and work right through to its completion. And he was able to do it quickly and efficiently. Teddy was also adept at details. Teddy was very observant and was generally quick at picking up new things. He graduated from Upland High School in 1963.

There was one thing that all of Teddy's friends knew and will still remember, and that is that he was a talker. He could pretty much talk to anybody about anything. This quality is one of the primary reasons that Teddy was such a popular person throughout his life. But Teddy was also dependable, loyal and trustworthy. Teddy was the kind of person who simply radiated good fellowship. While he maintained personal standards and his own personal values, Teddy was very accepting of others. With a distinct skill for working things out, Teddy was often the person who would organize events. In fact, Teddy was fairly comfortable playing the role of “host” for just about any occasion. When Teddy made friends, he made true and lasting friendships. While growing up, some of his best friends were Joe Kotwica and Joe Spillane. Later in life, he became friends with Rick Esslinger.

Teddy was a faithful and loving person. Some would even call his sentimental and a romantic at heart. His kindness and consideration radiated an aura of warmth to those around his. Teddy cared for what others thought and carried that into his marriage. On August 28, 1965 Teddy married Cheryl Lynne Williams at 11th Street Baptist Church of Upland, California. Compassionate and devoted, Teddy worked hard to make his new life partner happy.

Harmony was important to Teddy and he made every effort to maintain it with his family. Teddy was blessed with two sons, Aaron and Brandon. They were also blessed with two grandchildren, Sydney and Christian. Teddy was always conscious of the feelings others had. He was reasonable and understanding. As a result, Teddy was quick to solve disputes and did so without much fuss. His secret of success in this area was simple: Teddy would listen before he would act.

Taking his work seriously came naturally to Teddy, and he expected the same from those around him. Teddy was a good team player, someone who was born to cooperate with others. He was what some would call a “people person” and it was demonstrated in his good communication skills. Teddy was a steady worker, one who was realistic about schedules. The kind of details that would give family members and work colleagues fits were situations that Teddy handled well. He could understand the details without getting lost in the broad “big picture. He was employed for 39 years by GTE / Verizon. He brought harmony to his work environment, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done, while always maintaining respect for his colleagues.

Blessed with a practical nature, Teddy was a person who appreciated the regimented lifestyle of the military. He was a man who took his military obligation seriously, Teddy was an Army veteran and worked well with the others in his unit. After basic training, he was stationed in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Teddy was a Viet Nam Era veteran. Through his hard work and dedication, he achieved the rank of Specialist Fourth Class. He received several awards including a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and he earned an expert rating on the rifle.

A methodical man, Teddy enjoyed spending time working on his various hobbies. He had no problem following all of the steps and instructions on a given project and was proud of the fact that he could have something to show for his efforts. His favorite pursuits were softball, woodworking, traveling and playing music.

Teddy was one of those people who took pride in constantly putting forth his best effort. Nowhere was that more visible than in sports. Teddy was always enthusiastic and a great team player. In high school, Teddy played baseball. Recreational sports included fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, soccer, and volleyball. Teddy also liked being a sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite teams whenever he got the opportunity. Top of his list was baseball.

His keen interest in things that affected the lives of other people led Teddy to become actively involved in professional and community organizations. Because he was outgoing and worked well with others, Teddy did his fair share of volunteer work. And he wouldn't shy away from taking the lead on committees or events, either. He was a born list maker and was great at creating and sticking to schedules. In high school, Teddy was a member of the Key Club. Throughout his later years, Teddy was an active member of the worship team at his church.

His high moral standards and traditional values served Teddy well with his faith. Religion and faith were important to him. He was a member 11th Street Baptist Church for over 10 years, First Baptist Church of Upland for 27 years, and Sunrise Church for 5 years. During that time, he was Choir Director at First Baptist Church of Upland and a Bass Player at Sunrise Church. He was well respected because he was such an outgoing individual who sought to help in any manner he could.

Not only did Teddy enjoy traveling, but he also seemed to enjoy planning all of those trips and vacations. He was a facilitator who could easily make up a near perfect schedule of all of the things to do and see. He rarely tired of going back and revisiting his favorite places. Favorite vacations included Yosemite National Park and Hawaii.

Since it was easy for Teddy to meet and get to know new people, he quickly made friends, even in retirement. Once he met those new friends, he loved sharing stories and talking about the good old days. Since he was practical and cost effective, Teddy was ready when that day to retire finally came in 2004. In retirement, he found new pleasure in traveling with his sweetheart, Cheryl, playing with his grandkids, playing softball, and working on different projects around the house. Even in retirement, Teddy stayed in touch with his old friends and made plenty of new acquaintances. He was active in the community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities that retirement offered him.

Teddy passed away on March 22, 2009 at home surrounded by his family. Teddy fought a brave battle against cancer. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, his sons Aaron and Brandon (Mimi), his grandchildren Sydney and Christian, his mother Lorene, his sisters Nelda Shepherd, Sheila Spears and Lorinda, his brother-in-law Ron Williams. He also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Services were held at Sunrise Church in Ontario, California. Teddy was laid to rest in Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, California.

Teddy was a fantastic conversationalist who could engage just about anyone in a discussion. And whenever he said something, he meant it. Teddy was a down to earth person, outgoing and gregarious. He was without question the type of person who enjoyed experiencing things first hand. He was practical and sensible, but what friends and family will remember him for most is the fact that he was so understanding and kind. Everyone whose life he touched will miss Teddy Lee Culpepper.5
