Biography* | | R. P. Culpepper Slain, Believed Robbery Victim Body of Retired Restaurant Man Found Partly Immersed in Canal; $90 Missing. Felled by Blow The body of Richard P. Culpepper, 69 tear-old retired restaurant owner of 819 Ohio Avenue (East St. Louis, IL), was found Saturday at 7:45 a.m. in the drainage canal alongside of Collinsville Road, a short distance north of the Ninth Street subway, and near the "Y" intersection of State Route 11 and Alternate 4. It was first seen by passengers of a Chicago-St. Louis bus and was reported by them to the sheriff's office. Culpepper had apparently been slain for the money he was known to have carried. The body, when found, was half-seated in the shallow water. He was fully dressed, but his hat was missing. His wallet contained a one-dollar-bill, and identification card, and several receipts. One of Culpepper's shoes was unlaced and loosened so it fell off when the body was dragged from the water. He had a habit of carrying surplus money in his shoes. When he left home Friday at 9 a.m. he had slightly less than $90 with him, the proceeds of a government pension check which he had cashed Thursday. Employees of the State Loan Co. in the Murphy Building said he was there Friday and had put the money in his show when he left. His body was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in a Kurrus ambulance, but there it was found that he had been dead for several hours. An autopsy performed Saturday morning by Dr. J. C. Soucy, deputy county coroner, revealed that death was caused by severe brain concussion. There were marks on Culpeppers forehead and around the left eye that appeared to have been made by a heavy blunt instrument. Culpepper was born in McLeansboro, Hamilton Co., Feb. 10, 1864. He had spent most of his life in East St. Louis. His wife died several years ago. He leaves five daughters, Mrs. John Monday, Aurora; Mrs. William Hargraves, Galatia; Mrs. John Jones, McLeansboro; and Mrs. John Leitsch and Mrs. Thomas Dillard, East St. Louis. He lived with Mr. and Mrs. Dillard. The body is at Niederfeld's and will be shipped to McLeansboro Monday. Burial will be there in Liberty Cemetery Tuesday at 2 p.m.1 |

Benjamin Culpepper
Male, #3713, (say 1820 - between 1870 and 1880)
Birth* | say 1820 | Benjamin was born at Georgia say 1820. Based on the census records of 1820-1840, and his later presence in Barbour County, AL, it seems probable that Benjamin is the son of Elijah. However, this is not proven. If you can help with this, please contact Warren L. Culpepper. |
1830 Census | 1 Jun 1830 | Benjamin was probably a free white male, age 10 and under 15, in Elijah Culpepper of Stewart Co. GA's household, on the 1830 Census at Laurens Co., Georgia. Unaccounted for are 1 F10-15, 1 F15-20, and 1 Female 40-50 (presumably Elijah's wife). Also, no age bracket was given for Elijah as Head of Family..1 |

(WLC Note: While Benjamin is identified as Jr. in this deed and in an 1851 tax record, he is nor believed to be the son of Benjamin Sr., ID:3240, but of Elijah. The Jr. designation was probably used to distinguish this Benjamin from the more prominent and older Benjamin Sr.)2 |
1850 Census* | 1 Jun 1850 | Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Dooly Co., Georgia.3 |

District 7: 1 Poll, plus 101.25 acres in Lot 162 of District 7 in Dooly Co., GA (WLC Note: While Benjamin is identified as Jr. in this tax record and in an 1850 deed, he is nor believed to be the son of Benjamin Sr., ID:3240, but of Elijah. Santilla Culpepper
Female, #3720, (circa 1823 - before 1870)
DNA | | Historical research shows that brothers Christopher Columbus Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA and William Ebenezer Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA were probably born out of wedlock to Santilla Culpepper. DNA testing of one descendant of each of these brothers shows that the descendants have no paternal relationship to other Culpeppers or to each other. We would like to verify these test results by testing another descendant of each brother.1 |
Birth* | circa 1823 | Santilla was born at Laurens Co., Georgia, circa 1823. |
1830 Census | 1 Jun 1830 | Santilla was probably a free white female, age 5 and under 10, in John Cowan Culpepper's household, on the 1830 Census at Laurens Co., Georgia.2 |
1840 Census | 1 Jun 1840 | Santilla was probably a free white female, age 20 and under 30, in Nancy Caroline Culpepper's household, on the 1840 Census on 1 Jun 1840 at Laurens Co., Georgia.3 |
1850 Census | 1 Jun 1850 | Santilla, Elizabeth and John listed as a household member living with Nancy Caroline Culpepper on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Laurens Co., Georgia.4 |
Birth of Son | circa 1857 | Her son William Ebenezer Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA was born circa 1857 at Georgia. |
Birth of Son | 26 Aug 1859 | Her son Christopher Columbus Culpepper of Laurens Co., GA was born on 26 Aug 1859 at Laurens Co., Georgia.5 |
1860 Census* | 1 Jun 1860 | Santilla was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at Laurens Co., Georgia.6 |
Death* | before 1870 | She died at Laurens Co., Georgia, before 1870. |
Research note* | 12 Jun 2004 | The 1860 census lists only one Culpepper family in Laurens County, on page 614. The head of household is Santilla Culpepper, 39, female, born in GA, and there are two children, William E., age 3, and Columbus, age 9/12. She was in the 1850 Laurens County census in the household with Nancy Caroline (Lawson) Culpepper, widow of John Cowan Culpepper. Nancy was age 49, Satilla was age 27. Also in the household were Martha Culpepper, 21, and Elizabeth Culpepper, 25, both assumed to be daughters of John Cowan Culpepper and wife Nancy, who were married in 1823. Also in the household was Sampson Culpepper, age 18. This family consisting of Nancy, the three younger women, and Sampson, was the only Culpepper family in Laurens County in 1850. The 1840 census shows an almost identical group of individuals, except ten years younger. This census doesn't list specific names of individuals, only the head of household and the age ranges of the other individuals. So in this census, Nancy is listed by name, there is one son age 5 to 10, two daughters 10-15 corresponding to Martha and Elizabeth, and one female age 20-30, perhaps corresponding to Santilla, who should have been about 17 rather than 20. In the 1830 census, John Cowan is living, age 20-30, his wife Nancy is 20-30, the son is not yet born, and there are the three daughters, two aged 0-5, and one aged 5-10. The census data taken by itself would seem to indicate that Santilla was a daughter of John Cowan Culpepper, but we have no other evidence to support that, since we don't have any will or estate records for John Cowan. In fact, Ebenezer Culpepper's death certificate indicates that his mother was a "Ganiers" or Gainer. The information on the certificate was supplied by Ebenezer's son, James P. Culpepper. The only Gainers in the area seem to have been the family of James Gainer, of Washington Co, GA. This James was born around 1781-3, according to LDS records, and married Priscilla Brantley. James was the son of William Gainer and Martha Williams. Further research is needed.
