Hardin County

County History and Geography

In the Big Thicket of Southeast Texas, Hardin County is part of the larger East Texas Timberlands region. It was was formed in 1858 from Liberty and Jefferson counties. Kountze, its county seat, is about 70 miles northeast of Houston, 25 miles northwest of Beaumont, and 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Hardin is bordered by the counties of Tyler, Jasper, Orange, Jefferson, Liberty and Polk.
