Washington County

County History and Geography

In the Outer Coastal Plain in the eastern part of North Carolina, Washington County was formed in 1799 from Tyrrell County. Plymouth, its county seat, is on US-64, about 110 miles east of Raleigh. Washington is bordered by the counties of Tyrrell, Hyde, Beaufort, Martin and Bertie, and on the north by the Albemarle Sound and Chowan County.
