County History and Geography

In the Inner Coastal Plain in eastern North Carolina, Martin County was formed in 1774 from Halifax and Tyrrell Counties. Williamston, its county seat, is on US-13 and US-17, about 90 miles east of Raleigh. Martin is bordered by the counties of Washington, Beaufort, Pitt, Edgecombe, Halifax and Bertie.
