Chowan County

County History and Geography

In the Outer Coastal Plain in northeastern North Carolina, Chowan County was formed in 1670 from old Albemarle County. Edenton, its county seat, is on US-17, about 50 miles south of Norfolk and 120 miles east of Raleigh. Chowan is bordered by the east by Perquimans County, on the north by Gates County, on the west by the Chowan River and the counties of Hertford and Bertie, and on the south by the Albemarle Sound and Washington County.
