County History and Geography

In the Piedmont Region and the east central part of North Carolina, Wake County was formed in 1770 from Cumberland, Orange and Johnston Counties. Raleigh, its county seat, is on I-40, about 140 miles northeast of Charlotte and 140 miles southwest if Norfolk. Wake is bordered by the counties of Johnston, Harnett, Chatham, Durham, Granville and Franklin .
