County History
Stone
County was organized in 1916 from the northern portion of
Harrison County and was named in honor of
John M. Stone, one of the governors following the reconstruction period.
Part of the Gulfport-Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area,
Stone County's population is 13,622 (in 2000). The county seat and
largest city is Wiggins. Adjacent counties are Perry
County (northeast), George County (east),
Jackson County (southeast), Harrison County
(south), Pearl River County (west) and
Forrest County (northwest).
