Perry County
County History
Perry
County was formed in 1820 from the western part of Greene County and was
named in honor of Commodore Oliver H. Perry. In 1908,
Forrest County was
formed from its western townships. A large number of hardy pioneers
settled along Perry's watercourses during the early 1800s. Today, Perry
County is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical
Area, and as of 2000, its population was 12,138. Its county seat is New
Augusta. Other towns include Beaumont and Richton. Adjacent counties are
Wayne County (northeast), Greene County (east), George County
(southeast), Stone County (south),
Forrest County (west) and Jones
County (northwest).
