Warren County
History
In the Piedmont Region of Georgia,
Warren County was formed in 1793 from
Wilkes and Richmond Counties. Its county seat,
Warrenton , is a few
miles south of I-20 about 110 miles east of Atlanta and 35 miles west of Augusta. Warren is bordered by the counties of
Wilkes, McDuffie,
Jefferson, Glascock,
Hancock and Taliaferro.
The early Culpepper settlers in Warren County all appear to be descendants of
Robert Culpepper, born 1664, Norfolk, VA.
Robert, who died in Virginia about 1742, had two sons who were born in Virginia and
later migrated to Edgecombe County, North Carolina: Joseph and Benjamin Culpepper.
Following the Revolution, William Culpepper, who was probably a son of
Robert Culpepper Jr., migrated from Nash County, North Carolina to what is now Warren
County, Georgia. At about the same time, if not simultaneously, his sons Daniel and
William, Jr. did likewise. The majority of the Warren and Columbia county Culpeppers in
the 1800's, as well as most, if not all, of the modern day Caucasian Culpeppers in Warren,
McDuffie and Columbia County, are descendants of this Daniel Culpepper and his wife Sarah
Mariner.
Also after the American Revolution, two of Joseph's sons (John and Sampson) by Joseph's
second wife and three of Joseph's grandsons (Malachi, John Jr., and David) migrated to the
Warren County area, and all owned land there in the 1790's. They later moved further west
and none left any known Culpepper descendants in the area.
Another great-grandson of Robert's had settled in the Warren county area by 1805: Nathan
Culpepper (1784-1833). Nathan first appears in the Warren County records as a young man.
He was on the Warren County tax list in 1805 and married Fanny Gardner in Warren County in
1806. He may have come to Warren County to rejoin the family of his second cousin, Daniel
who also lived in Nash County and who had children the same age as Nathan.

Chronicle, Augusta, GA and The Warrenton Clipper, Warrenton, GA.

(This is possibly #4876, Daniel Culpepper. In the extensive
Warren County records of the late 18th and early 19th century, there
were numerous records for Daniel and his father Daniel. However,
there was only one other record found for a David Culpepper. Since
Daniel could be mistaken for David in handwriting, and since there
is such scant evidence for him otherwise, we assume that there
probably was no David.) |
1828-29 Postal Records: "You've

The Rural Cabinet was a weekly paper published in Warrenton. Among other
things, it printed on a quarterly basis the names of people who had letters at the Post
Office.
