History

In the Piedmont Region of Georgia, Wilkes County was formed in 1777 as an original county from the Cherokee and Creek sessions of 1773. Its county seat, Washington, is on US-78 about 110 miles east of Atlanta and 50 miles WNW of Augusta. Wilkes is bordered by the counties of Elbert, Lincoln, McDuffie, Warren, Taliaferro and Oglethorpe.
