Franklin County
History
In
the Piedmont Region of Georgia, Franklin County was formed in 1784 as an
original county from the Cherokee and Creek cessions.
It covered a large part of upper Georgia, from the present day borders of Rabun
and Towns counties to Clark and from the Savannah river to the Oconee in Hall
and Jackson counties. The adjacent map shows the actual area covered.
Its county seat, Carnesville, is on I-85
about 80 miles northeast of Atlanta. Franklin is bordered
by the counties of
Stephens, Banks,
Madison and Hart, and the South
Carolina counties of Pendleton (extinct),
Anderson and
Oconee.
The primary Culpepper settlers in Northeast Georgia were Joseph Culpepper
(1765-1816) and his descendants. It is not clear when Joseph moved there, but he
was there by 1794 at the time of his first known son's birth. Of Joseph's eight
known children, it appears seven had moved to Mississippi and Alabama by 1840,
leaving in the area only Joseph's son John (1809-1870+). Two of John's sons
(Caleb C. and William H.) were killed in the Civil War, but three others (Ansel
Monroe, John E. and Merriday H.) stayed in northeast Georgia and are the
progenitors of most, if not all of, the Culpepper families that have persisted
there.

Burials
Culpepper Cemetery
Carnesville, Franklin Co, GA. (Map).
Near I-85, 5 miles northwest of Carnesville on the southwest side of
GA-198. One mile northeast of intersection with Nesmith Road.
Surveyed by Warren Culpepper on 3 Oct 1998, 25 graves were found in this
well-kept and easily located cemetery. The graves are those of descendants
(and spouses of descendants) of John Culpepper (b abt 1809, d aft 1870).
Jane Culpepper's grave is the earliest that can be identified. There are
four crude stones without dates marking graves. Possibly one of these is
John Culpepper (husband of Jane) who died after 1870.
