Crawford County
History
In the Upper
Coastal Plains Region of Georgia,
Crawford County was formed in
1822 from Houston County which had been formed the
previous year from the Creek Session of 1821. Its county seat,
Knoxville, is on
US-341 about 80 miles south of Atlanta and 25 miles west of Macon. Crawford is bordered by the counties of
Monroe, Bibb,
Peach, Macon,
Taylor and Upson.

1842: Mary W. Slater petitioned the court for title to one half of Lot
56 in Knoxville which the deceased had previously given title to
William Millirons. On 7 Mar 1842, the title was transferred as

1842: Lewis Hicks granted leave to sell all lands of the estate.

1845: Aaron Shurley, Daniel Culpepper, L. W. Hicks and S. S. Wright as
freeholders distribute estate property to Lewis F. Hicks in right of
his wife and Wesley Culpepper, minor. Hicks also appointed guardian of
Wesley. A negro woman sold by the deceased to Littleberry D. Causey
was taken back. (Inferior Court Minutes, pages 186-187) |

1846: Lewis Hicks was dismissed as Wesley's Guardian and on 1 Mar
1847, Berry Sullivan was appointed as his replacement (Inferior Court
Minutes, pages 241 and 258) On 4 Nov 1850, guardianship was switched

The names below are
only for the 40 acre Gold lots, which were only the southeastern part of the
Cherokee land. There was a separate 1932 lottery for the balance of the land
(see below). All land was awarded in Cherokee County which was then quickly
divided into ten different counties.

Culpepper Creek, In Crawford County, skirting Roberta on the
east, 20 miles southwest of Macon. The creek is crossed by US-80, US-341, and GA-42.
It was probably named for or by Isaiah Culpepper (#4901) who
purchased a significant amount of land in Crawford County during the
1830's. |

Eleven miles further south on US341, starting at Fort Valley, is the
George B. Culpepper Highway (See Peach
County). |
