Alabama Culpepper Archives
Chilton County
History
Chilton County is
located in the central part of the state, with its northeastern half lying
within the Piedmont Region and its southwestern half in the Southern Coastal
Plain. Chilton was created in 1868 from lands
taken from Autauga, Bibb,
Perry, and Shelby counties. The
Coosa River forms the eastern boundary of the county. Originally named Baker
Co., Chilton Co. received its present name in 1874. The original county seat was
at Grantville, but when the courthouse burned in 1870, the county seat was
removed to Goosepond, a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Goosepond
was later renamed Clanton. Clanton is on I-65, about
40 miles north of Montgomery and 50 miles south of Birmingham. Chilton is bordered by the
counties of Shelby, Coosa,
Elmore, Autauga,
Dallas, Perry and
Bibb.
