In 1785, York was formed as a County of Camden District, and then in 1791 became part of Pinckney District. In 1798, York was made a District. In 1813, a small part of easternmost York was split off and made part of Lancaster District. In 1868, York was redesignated a County, and in 1897, the NW corner was split off for Cherokee Co.
