Obituary* | 15 May 2002 | PHILADELPHIA -- Graveside services for Sara Castle Culpepper Steel will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Cedarlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Dan Howard officiating. McClain-Hays Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Steele, 90, of Philadelphia, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Born in Meridian, Mrs. Steel spent her early life in Meridian surrounded by a large family. She was named after a respected Meridian physician Sara Castle who delivered her. Her father had been a Meridian businessman when the Great Depression hit America hard in the 1920's. Sara and her siblings left school to work and help support the family and erase the debt her father owed. As with most families during this time, much was lost, but a strong moral character and resilience was formed from these difficult times.
She married John Samuel "Sam" Steel Jr. in 1936 and together they moved to Philadelphia in 1944. For many years, they owned and operated Philadelphia Equipment Company, specializing in the sales and service of farm equipment and automobiles. Mrs. Steel worked in the office of the family business during this time.
She is a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, she was a Sunday School teacher of 12 year olds. She was involved in the Philadelphia Band Boosters Parents Organization, the Adam Byrd Literary Society, the C.C. Club, and a member of the Philadelphia Country Club. She was dedicated to various activities of her children, and served in volunteer and chaperone capacities. Her other interests included playing bridge, reading, and playing the piano and organ.
After the death of her husband in 1963, she opened and operated an antique and oriental import gift shop in Philadelphia, continuing her interest in decorative arts. She had rental apartments in her home and made longstanding friends with young people who shared her residence. She was known to everyone as "Miss Sara." Her best friend, Jane Wilbur Cole describes her as "always being cheerful and an inspiration to us all and everyone in Philadelphia loved her."
Survivors include her son, John Samuel "Sonny" Steel III and his wife, Sylvia, of Jackson; a daughter, Sabyna Jane Steel Sterrett and her husband, Dr. Hatch Sterrett, of McLean, Va; five granddaughters, Sandy Steel Temple and her husband, Mac, Sara Jane Steel, Sharon Steel Davis and her husband, Mike, Susan Steel Waters and her husband, Joel, all of Jackson; Stacy Steel Swedenburg and her husband, Shaun, of Duluth, Ga; ten great-grandchildren, Kelly, Michelle and Caroline Temple, Heather and Eric Davis, Sam, Swayze and Shelby Waters; Steel and Sydney Swedenburg; a loyal friend and caretaker of 47 years, Mattie McAfee.
Pallbearers will be Don Perry, Jimmy Prince, David Mars, Everett Cole, Jimmy Rea, Charles Mars, Joe Goodwin, Hugh Thomasson, and Dick Molpus. Memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries, 450 Towne Center Blvd., Ridgeland, Ms.,39157 or First Baptist Church, 414 Pecan Ave., Philadelphia, Ms. 39350. Visitation will be Thursday from 1p.m.- 3 p.m. at the funeral home.2 |

Obituary* | 23 Apr 2015 | Jalie Frances Land was born on March 28, 1924 and passed peacefully from this world on April 22, 2015. She is survived by her grandchildren, Wendy Michelle Land, John Douglas Land, Mark Nathan Cavender, and Melissa Gate Cavender all of Calhoun, Georgia; two sisters, Carolyn Antionette Culpepper Carter of Jacksonville, Florida and Henrietta Culpepper Glascock of Jacksonville, Florida and a brother, John James Culpepper of Cuba, Alabama; along with 7 adoring great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Jalie was born and reared in the country near Liberty Baptist Church, Toomsuba, Mississippi, her home church. She graduated from Sumter County High School in 1942. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama after her graduation to work for the phone company and the next year met John Watson Land while he was on furlough from his duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II. They courted by mail for two years and were wed on December 25, 1945 upon his release from the military. Their only child, John Lynn, was born on February 1, 1947. Jalie and her small family lived in Saudi Arabia for five years as her husband had an excellent opportunity to train mechanics there. It was for her, paradise. They also lived again in Birmingham for another three years and Atlanta for nearly twenty years before circling back home to Toomsuba for the past thirty-three years. Jalie retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after a successful career, but is most known for her remarkable roles as sister, wife, mother, grandmother, favorite aunt and hostess to all. She loved to entertain people in her home and delighted in making those around her feel at home.
Jalie lost her only son in 1982 and while it broke her heart, it did not break her spirit. By God’s grace, with the help of her husband and family, and by her own inner strength she found a way to continue living life joyfully. Unconditional love, compassion and kindness are her hallmarks. When her husband died in 2004, she carried on with the same courage and grace. She was a cancer survivor several times over and taught many of us how to embrace life no matter the circumstances. To say she was sweet does not begin to capture her generous and loving nature.5 |

Obituary* | 17 Apr 2019 | Jacksonville - Carolyn Antoinette Culpepper Carter was born on August 21, 1926, in Meridian, Mississippi, the nearest hospital to her rural home in Cuba, Alabama, and died peacefully on April 15, 2019. She was the third of seven children born to Rob and Gertrude Culpepper. After graduation from Sumter County High School in 1944 and a short stint at Livingston State Teacher's College, Carolyn moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she found a job with the Internal Revenue Service (a position she held for over 40 years before retiring in 1984). In Jacksonville she also met William Craven Carter, and after courting for two years, they were married on September 1, 1950, at Riverside Baptist Church. Carolyn and Bill were deeply in love for nearly 65 years before his passing in April of 2015. They were soulmates, friends, and partners in their ceaseless devotion to serving God and helping others, whether at the church (where Carolyn kept the nursery children for forty years and was known as "Carter"), working at the hospital (where Carolyn was a "Pink Lady"), supporting Habitat for Humanity, inviting needy people into their home, tending the homebound or many other generous offerings.
Carolyn was a great southern-style cook, a talented seamstress, a mean Rook, Chinese checkers, and dominoes player, and wonderful mother - not only to her own children but also to Amy Wiegenstein, a surrogate daughter, and many other who thought of her as a second momma. She was actively involved in her children's activities and, later, in her grandchildren's events as well. Carolyn was unwavering in her strong beliefs, staying connected to her home church and her deep faith until her death.
Carolyn leaves behind her three children: Candace McKibben (Bruce) of Tallahassee; Andrew Carter (friend Leslee) of Green Cove Springs; and Annette Waller (Raymond) of Jacksonville; along with nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren with one on the way. She is also survived by her brother, John Culpepper, of Cuba, Alabama, and many nieces and nephews. In her later life she was encouraged and blessed by several loving people, including Michelle Trawick, her caregiver; Peggy Hsieh, her "Sparkler" at Westminster Oaks; and the lovely Tallahassee Threshold Choir. Special thanks are also given to the staff at Westminster Oaks and Big Bend Hospice and to her loving Tallahassee church, The Tallahassee Fellowship.
Her Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 18 at Riverside Baptist Church, Jacksonville, preceded by a viewing at 1:00 PM and followed by a brief graveside farewell. A memorial service will be held at the Maguire Center at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee on April 19 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carolyn's memory can be made to Riverside Baptist Church (Jacksonville), or to the Tallahassee Threshold Choir.6 |
