Biography* | | From Joan Croft Ashton:
My father told a story of the hard times the family had during and after the depression (everyone had a hard time). He remembers that someone left a large sack of flour on the porch, and when Grandpa found it, he threw it out in the yard. Very typical of the hard-headedness in the family.
I also remember helping bring in one of my Grandfather's last crops of tobacco. Most all the children were stationed at the drying barn, and since I was the smallest able to help, my station was in the canvas sled that was pulled between the rows of tobacco by a tractor. My Grandfather drove the tractor, as my Uncle Roger and my Father walked beside the sled, pulling the ripe leaves from the bottom of the plants. My job was to straighten all the leaves so all the stems pointed the same direction. When the sled was full, all the other brothers and sisters tied it in handfulls to sticks and then it was put up on racks high up in the rickety barn with heaters to help it dry. After drying, it was then removed from the drying sticks, and stacked in a 'wheel' shape, and wrapped in burlap, after which it sat in an abandoned house at the front of thier rented land for a period of time before being taken to market where it was auctioned off. I vaguely remember one cotton harvest, but that was reeely a long time ago. If I relate that story to anyone, it seems to them a world away from today, and I find it a truly unique experience. Even though several siblings joined the military and were away from the farming family as adults, they always came together sometime during the summer to help with various harvests.1 |
