About every other Sunday would go down to Alvin(home). After Mr. Gee was put in charge, he was transferred to San Antonio Branch office and mr. L. A. Murff from Galveston office was put in his place. After Mr. Murff was in the office a few weeks he was taken away and Mrs. H. P. Price was put in his place. All this time our office had been in the Moore-Burnette Bldg, Rm 210. Biography* | | Milton was a graduate of Rice Institute and was the recipient Ward Watkins Architectural Scholarship allowing him to study abroad. He returned to Houston and married his sweetheart, Ruth Louise Dreaper. Milton was one of the architects that designed Rice Stadium, Methodist Hospital Complex in the Med Center, Houston Baptist College, and numerous others. He was very family oriented and was famous for his pancake breakfasts.
"The Houston Chronicle," 24 May 1957: "NEIGHBOR OF NOTE - Architect McGinty Is Award Winner In Florence, Italy, nearly 30 years ago, an architectural student from Houston worked patiently for weeks on drawings of the interior and exterior of the Pazzi Chapel. Faithfully reproducing the chapel drawings, he learned much of the work of the architects of the Italian Renaissance. Thus did Milton B. McGinty earn credit in the American Academy in Florence before establishing himself as a practicing Houston architect. The chapel drawings were part of nearly a year's architectural study and travel in Italy, France, Spain and England, on the first traveling fellowship ever awarded at Rice Institute. The scholarship had been awarded by the late William Ward Watkin, head of the architectural department of Rice for years. In the years since that tour of Europe he won at Rice, McGinty has served as president of the Houston Chapter, American Institute of Architects; president of the Texas Society of Architects and as director in the A.I.A. In 1949 he was named a Fellow in the A.I.A., a high distinction for an architect and served six years on the State Board of Architectural Examiners. McGinty is co-ordinating architect for the Houston Public School System and is serving for the 16th year as a member of the City Planning Commission. McGinty was one of the architects of the Rice Stadium and was architect for the new Masonic Temple on Montrose Blvd. and of the Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. A native of Saratoga, where he was born in 1905, McGinty lived for part of his boyhood in Roswell, N.M., and the remainder in Houston. He was married in 1929 to Miss Ruth Dreaper, daughter of retired banker Jack Dreaper. They have a married daughter, Mrs. George Laigle, wife of a professional engineer; and three sons, the eldest, John, a senior in architecture at Rice. A brother, Burke McGinty, is a professional associate. The Milton McGinty family lives at 2203 Yorktown Drive."
"ARCHI-ARTS BALL TO REVIVE CAESAR'S ERA Togas, head wreaths and cries of "Hail Caesar!" will bring the days of the Roman Empire into the Shamrock Hilton Hall of Exhibits Saturday night for the Rice Institue Archi-Arts Ball. Several hundred persons are expected at the colorful dance and pageant that is held to raise money for the William Ward Watkin Memorial Traveling Fellowship. The fellowship, worth $1500, goes each year to the graduate architectural student who wins in a competition. The first winner of the ward, in 1928, was Milton B. McGinty of 2203 Yorktown, who is now a successful Houston architect and a patron of the Rice Architecture Society. The society sponsors the annual costume ball. This year, one of eight coeds will be chosen queen, and she with another student named "Caesar Augustus," will reign as in 27 B.C."1 |
