Bernie Marie Phillips
Female, #13811, (8 Nov 1894 - 29 Jul 1915)
Father* | John Henry Phillips |
Mother* | Julia Matilda Culpepper |

Census* | 1900 | She was in the in 1900 census at Bacon Level, Randolph Co., Alabama. |
Death* | 29 Jul 1915 | She died at Bacon Level, Randolph Co., Alabama, on 29 Jul 1915 at age 20. |
Burial* | Her body was interred at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, Randolph Co., Alabama. | |
Biography* | According to Mrs. Charles (Margaret Whatley) Lee, in a 4 Jan 1979 letter, Mrs. Harvey Boone said that Bernie Marie "was simply beautiful." The following memorial by her uncle, Joseph Richard Culpepper, appeared in an unknown source: IN MEMORY Of Miss Bernie Phillips, who was called higher on July 29th, thus breaking the hitherto unbroken happy family circle. It has often been said that death seeks a shining mark for his fatal shafts, and the truth has been verified in this instance, when this sweet young maiden was so suddenly and unexpectedly stricken down, leaving bruised, bleeding hearts that can never be healed this side of the happy, golden shore. Standing on the bright threshold of life's early morn, she was the light of the household, the joy of the home, the idol of parents, the comfort of sisters and brothers. She was self-sacrificing, delighting in serving others without ostentation; shedding the radiant beams of her pure, love-lit soul on friends and acquaintances, making glad the hearts of those, who chanced to know her, and to know was but to love her. She bloomed as a fragrant rose in the garden of life, diffusing the sweet incense of her gentle spirit over all who came in contact with her. She was the embodiment of virtue, purity, and truth, with high ideals; serving the low, the weak, the little and the mean with an upward look and an outward reach for the higher, nobler, better things that adorn and beautify feminine character and make woman so nearly divine. To say that she is missed, O, so much! is but a feeble expression of the sad bereavement of the home and of friends, but as the sparkling diamond displays its beauty and brilliance to best advantage when placed on a background of darkest velvet, so may this dark background of sorrow call out the best and noblest virtues in the hearts and lives of the bereaved ones. Though her stay on earth was brief, the world was better and brighter and human burdens made lighter for her having dwelt among us, and her memory will be dearly cherished till the last heart throbs of friends and loved ones cease. We grieve not as those who have no hope, but rest in the sweet assurance that our loss is her eternal gain, and that her pure spirit is basking in the never failing glories of the eternal world, where we home "some sweet day" to meet her. Lovingly, Uncle Joe Culpepper. |

Death* | 28 Jan 1990 | He died at Lake Wales, Polk Co., Florida, on 28 Jan 1990 at age 78. |
Biography* | Mrs. J. H. (Margaret Phillips) Dodd wrote in a 26 Jul 1978 letter: Dodd was a salesman for Cudahay Packing Co. In June 1943 Dodd went into the Navy. In December 1943 he was assigned to the LST 60 as First Class Motor Machinist. On April 17, 1944 his ship along with a convoy of about 100 other ships sailed to various ports in England. He was in the first wave on D-Day to land on the French coast. He made 52 crossings of the English Channel. His ship took tanks, jeeps and ammunition over and brought to England the wounded soldiers and the prisoners. He was discharged in October 1945. When he came home he was employed as a salesman with Toledo Scale Co. After so many strikes by John L. Lewis' miners, business throughout the city was at a standstill almost. Red [Robert V. Phillips] wrote us that the people who owned the General Merchandise Store in Waverly wanted to retire. We came down and decided to buy the store. We operated the store from 1949 to 1971. By that time we were worn out and ready to sell out. In the meantime we had bought 180 acres of land and had started in the cattle business. We have sold most of them, keeping only what Dodd could manage by himself. Now we only have 40 cows, 2 bulls and 34 baby calves. J. H. Dodd was the owner of Waverly Grocery in Waverly, FL. Mrs. Dodd continued in a 20 Dec 1978 letter: We had a little excitement last Thursday night. A 40-acre wooded area joins our back yard and all kinds of animals and birds live there. Our german shepard bayed a 'possum in the edge of the yard where some palm branches had fallen on a log. Dodd went down with a flashlight and was pulling the palm branches away. He got his hand too close to the 'possum and he grabbed Dodd's third and little fingers. He wouldn't let go so Dodd jerked his hand loose and almost ripped the whole end of his third finger off. The little finger had a hole all the way through. He came in with blood all over his hand, arm and clothes. We looked at it and it would be OK. I dressed it as best I could for the night and next A.M. I wanted him to go to the doctor but he [Dodd] had promised a carpenter friend that he would help him so he went on to work. On Monday, it still looked awful to me and I persuaded him to go let the doctor look at it. We went over and the doctor said I had done a good job taking care of it and he thought it would heal OK. He said soak it in warm salty water 3 or 4 times a day and keep it bandaged. I don't know if he [Dodd] is a die hard, or if I am a good nurse. It does look better to me now but I think it will be a week or two before it is well. In a 1 Feb 1991 letter, Mrs. Dodd wrote of the death of her husband: Dodd, my husband, died Jan. 28, 1990. He had several heart attacks and was in and out of the hospital during 1989. The last time, he went in Dec. 28, 1989 and was there until Jan. 28, 1990. |
