James was born May 9, 1956, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to John Dee Culpepper and Lillian (Wright) Culpepper. James lived most of his life in Ray County in the Richmond, Camden and Orrick areas. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for over 20 years for the Kincaid Construction company in Kansas City. Earlier, he worked for Missouri Rock Co. at the Orrick quarry. Being a very talented man, James also did carpentry work and like to build things. He helped restore the Assembly of God Church in Richmond and the Ray County Salvation Army store in Richmond. He traveled to Seattle, Washington, where he built small homes for the homeless. Recently, he traveled to Oceanside where he passed away. James liked to fish and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed blues and classic rock music. He especially liked to spend time with his family, especially the kids, and his nephews and nieces. He is survived by a daughter, Jamie L. Newsome and husband, Robert, of Orrick; a son, Chris Battagler of Rayville; a brother John Culpepper and wife, Mary, of Amoret, Missouri; a sister, Joy Culpepper Story of Gladstone; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Newsome of Orrick. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jerry Culpepper; and a sister, Jeanie Culpepper Miner. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at Gowing Funeral Home in Orrick. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Alvin Langston officiating. Cremation will follow the services.3 |

Survivors include her partner in life, Larry Holtzclaw of the home; two brothers and one sister in-law, John R. and Mary Culpepper of Amoret, MO and James Culpepper of Galveston, TX; one sister and brother in-law, Joy and Larry Story of Richmond; several nieces and nephews; 4 step children and their spouses, Dustin and Cassandra Holtzclaw of Chillicothe, MO, Michael and Kelly Holtzclaw of Holt, MO, Josh and Sarah Holtzclaw of Chillicothe and Jacob and Heather Holtzclaw of Chillicothe. In addition to her parents, Jeanie was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry D. Culpepper and one step-son, Timothy R.Holtzclaw. Jeanie was an assembler for several years for Orbeseal, Lear Corp and Johnson Control. She was of the Christian faith. She had lived in the Ray County area for the last 20 years. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, North Care Hospice or to any other local hospice. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be Thursday, February 2, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be in the Cravens Cemetery in Camden, MO. |
