Obituary* | 6 Mar 2016 | It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Shirley C. Mayhugh, of Fairfax City, Virginia. She returned to her heavenly home on Sunday, February 28, 2016. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family, her beautiful orchids, and her favorite 50''s music. The loving devotion from her family and friends, and her strong spiritual beliefs, supported her in her struggle, and ultimately gave her a calming peace. She was a vibrant 81 years young. Shirley is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bill Mayhugh; her two sons, Scott Mayhugh and Cathy of Ocean View, Delaware, Jack Mayhugh and wife Sandra of Silver Spring, Maryland; and her five grandchildren, Thomas, Nicholas, Lilly, Christopher, and Matthew. She also leaves her beloved grandogs, Carter and Tobi. Shirley was born Shirley Jo Culpeper on October 7, 1934 in Gainesville, Georgia to Thomas C. and Geneva A. Culpeper. The family moved to Arlington, Virginia and she attended Washington-Lee High School, graduating in 1953. After high school, she established a very successful career as a model, actress and singer in the Washington, DC area. On April 19, 1958, she married William S. Mayhugh "Bill", and the pair settled down in Northern Virginia. The couple welcomed two children and with Bill''s radio career firmly established, Shirley set out to raise her two sons. Her surviving children and grandchildren remember her as an amazing, beautiful soul, who always supported them, never judged them, and loved them unconditionally. She encouraged them to always pursue their goals, and to live, love and laugh often. In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother (Nonnie), Shirley was a devoted wife and loyal friend. She enjoyed lunching and bowling with her girlfriends. She was passionate about her flower gardens, and had a special affinity for orchids. She loved her wine, the beach, the country, crossword puzzles, garage sales and playing poker with her family. She was a woman who possessed extraordinary poise, grace and class. Shirley''s wishes were to be cremated, and to have her ashes sprinkled on the beach and in the ocean. A visitation/memorial is scheduled on Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. A celebration of Shirley''s life will follow at the Army Navy Country Club (Arlington), from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m....1 |
