William B. Knox

Male, #57332, (say 1803 - )
Birth*say 1803 He was born say 1803 at North Carolina
Marriage*8 Dec 1825 He married Hester Wilkins at Hancock Co., Georgia, on 8 Dec 1825.1
Birth of Son30 Oct 1835 His son John Hugh Knox was born on 30 Oct 1835 at Randolph Co., Georgia.2
Research note*13 Jun 2007 The names of all of the Knox children are on the 1850 Census - Mississippi - Pontitoc County. Here is the family at that time, although, they then moved on to Texas, Lavaca County, and eventually to the Halletsville area:

William B. Knox - father born abt 1803 either NC or GA

Hester (Hetty Wilkins) Knox - mother born abt 1807 - GA

They married between 1823 and 1825, in GA.

Their children are:

James - born abt 1829

Avianna - a daughter, born 1830 (married James Byars)

Catherine - born abt 1833she married a Douglass, in TX)

William - born abt 1834

John Hugh - born abt 1836

Amsley - a daughter, born abt. 1835

Elizabeth - born 1838 (MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER)

Tyrolese - a daughter, born abt 1840

Harrison - a son, born abt 1846.
Research noteMay 2008 Dwayne,
I was interested to hear that William B. Knox was a founding member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Chambers County, Alabama. That probably means that Francis G. Culpepper was a member of that church as well. I'd bet that over time we could piece together quite a few of the families who were in that colony that went to Texas with Frank Culpepper. There were no Knox's buried in this cemetery, nor in any other recorded cemetery in Chambers. But I do see a number of other familiar names there, possibly some who might have been related to Francis G. Culpepper's wife, Eglantine Langley, such as Rev. War Soldier James Langley and various early Anglins.

Subject: Re: old family legend?

Lew,

William B. Knox followed Francis Culpepper from Alabama to Texas. They were both in Chambers County Alabama, both his son John Hugh and Cynthia Jane Culpepper were born in Chambers County. William is on the 1840 census there, (with nine children) and is listed as a founding member of the Mt Pisgah Baptist church there.
Research noteMay 2008 Knox Cemetery, Sweet Home, Texas
This very old burial ground has been lost. According to Janet Saylor, William Knox brought his family to Texas around 1850, along with the family of his daughter, Martha Hawkins Knox Goode, and her husband, Obadiah. Knox later decided to return to Alabama. However, after selling his land to John Bennett in exchange for twenty slaves, the Civil War started and Knox couldn't get back to Alabama. Family legend says that William Knox's wife, Hetta Wilkins Knox, died in Alabama, but her body was packed in a coffin with charcoal and brought to Texas where she was buried in the Knox Cemetery. There were probably other Knox children buried there, too. Over the years cattle were allowed to roam over the cemetery and it was turned into rubble. Supposedly, the Goode or Knox family erected a large stone at the edge of the property, as a remembrance, but that location is unknown.3

Obituary*6 Nov 2014 Dr. Robert Dean Culpepper of Raymond, Mississippi, known to friends and family as Bob, died on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi following a brief struggle with cancer.

Bob was born at St. Dominic's on October 27, 1946 to Royce Leo Culpepper and Mary Dean Bridges Culpepper. Bob spent the early years of his childhood in Jackson on Culpepper Drive, but Bob's father was a skilled jack-of-all-trades whose career took the family around the country and around the world.

Bob spent most of his elementary and junior high school years in Cocoa, Florida, where he led a carefree all-American boyhood and was an eyewitness to the early efforts of the space program, once selling a coca-cola to famed rocket scientist Wehrner Von Braun.

Bob spent his high school years in Rochester, New York, where he earned a spot on the varsity basketball team, Hof, West Germany, where he made many lifelong friendships, and Jackson, where he returned home to graduate from Forest Hill.

After receiving degrees from Hinds Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi, Bob worked for two years as a computer programmer at a military installation on Shemya, Alaska, one of the most remote islands of the Aleutian chain, to save money for medical school.

In 1974 Bob returned to Jackson to attend the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he met the love of his life, Madena (Dena) Jane Gibson.

Bob and Dena were married in 1976 and graduated medical school together in 1977. Everyone who met Bob and Dena could not help but be struck by the uncommon chemistry they shared.

Bob and Dena built a house and raised a family of five children on one hundred acres of land outside of Raymond. For over thirty years they worked together as medical consultants for the Mississippi Office of Disability Determination Services. Bob also spent ten years as the medical director of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility where he was greatly respected by the inmates and staff for the high level of professional care he rendered.

In 2007, Bob was called by the Holy Spirit and was baptized at the Raymond Presbyterian Church. Bob took to the faith with a convert's zeal and became a pillar of his church, ultimately serving as a ruling elder and becoming a shepherd to others in their walks with the Lord.

Bob inherited his father's can-do spirit and his mother's big heart and sense of humor. He spent many years renovating an antebellum home on Eagle Lake, Mississippi and loved spending time there with his family. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, cherished his daily drive to work with his beloved wife, and reveled in being a grandfather.

His wonderful stories, wise counsel, and generous spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, mother, and older brother, Royce Bridges Culpepper. He is survived by his wife, his younger sister Elizabeth Culpepper Lovvorn, his children Ashley, Robert, John, Catherine, and Stephen, his niece Sayward Ely Fortner, whom he loved like a daughter, their spouses, his four grandchildren, Irene, Lexie, Mary, and Collin, and much extended family.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Wright and Ferguson. Visitation will be on Friday, November 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Wright and Ferguson in Raymond. Services will be held at the Raymond Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Raymond Cemetery.5
