Death of an Old Citizen Mr. James R. (Robb) Cook was born and raised in Fairfield District, South Carolina, but moved to Troup county in early manhood. He departed this life, about midnight, on Friday night, his disease being dropsy of the heart. The sad event occurred at his residence, about seven miles west of Lagrange, near the old Pleasant Grove (Baptist) church. His remains were buried at Long Cane, on Sunday last, at one o'clock, Rev. P. A. Heard officiating at the grave. The citizens of the community generally were present. Mr. Cook was for many years a Baptist , but died a member of the Presbyterian communion. He had been married four times - his first wife having been a daughter of the late Wiley J. Sterling (Note: Frances Emily Sterling b. 5/7/1821 d. 3/31/1855 in Lagrange), the second a Miss Cameron (Note: Martha J. Cameron), the third a Miss Keever (Note: Louisa R. Teaver is correct name), and the last a Miss Darden (Note: Leonora Adella Darden). Five children survive him (Note: From his first wife, Sterling Cook, Mary Virginia Cook, James Cook, Jr. and Francis Marion Cook survived him; there were other children from his other marriages who were living at the time of his death, Algie Cook and Helen Cook in particular from his last marriage; I do not know about any others) . He was seventy years of age (Note: b. 5/14/1811 d. 5/2/1884; which would make him just shy of 73). Thus, "we spend our years as a tale that is told." "The days of our years are three score years and ten, and if by reason of strength, they be four score years, yet is their strength, labor, and sorrow, for is is soon cut off and we fly away." (Note: I have a photograph of James taken sometime possibly in his 30's and on the back my great-aunt wrote that he was married 5 times; however, I have not been able to substantiate a 5th wife who would have probably been his 3rd wife between Martha Cameron and L. R. Teaver.)3

Message Board Post at GAJASPER-L Archives on 7 Aug 2003 Subject: Bonner/Selman Alice (Ally) Selman was the wife of Whitmill/Whitmal Bonner who died in Jaspar Co. Ga om 1820/1821. There is some reference material which states Alice was the daughter of Capt John Selman and that he was made guardian of the Bonner children after their fathers death. It is not conceivable that Col John Selman was their grandfather since he was born about the same time as Alice. Most likely he was the children's uncle. At least, that's what the Selmans think. I've been to the courthouse in Jasper Co and looked through the records, but my time was limited. However, I did not find a reference that would clarify the relationship between Capt John Selman and Alice Selman Bonner. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Research note | 20 Feb 2008 | I believe I might have some information about the missing Sterling. My ancestor John Sterling came from Glasgow Scotland with three brothers on a ship called the Two Sisters in the early/mid 1700s. The ship docked in Boston and my ancestor along with one brother left Boston and settled in Eastern Canada (Then called Lower Canada) The other two brothers settled in North Carolina and Georgia and were never heard from. Perhaps one of these brothers is your missing relative. If it is the brother that settled in Georgia, his first name was Charles. These brothers are from the Clan Sterling in Central Scotland and members of the family are on the Council of Scotish Chieftans still today. Other members of the family such as myself reside in Eastern Canada.6 |

Male, #45956, (1800 - )
Birth* | 1800 | He was born in 1800 at Georgia.1 |
Biography | | From "Histories of LaGrange and Troup County, GA, Vol. I & III": Two brothers came to Troup Co. by way of Jasper, Gwinnett, Irwin, and Upson Counties, Ga. There name is often spelled Stirling, but mostly Sterling. 1. Wiley J. Sterling, b. 7-1-1796 S.C. d. 11-7-1851 Troup Co. He married 1-28-1819 Jasper Co., Ga. Betheny Bonner, b. 12-20-1802 Ga. d. 6-27-1881 Troup Co. He was among the promoter- pioneers who pushed the quick settlement and refinement of the Western frontier of Georgia. He promoted the town of Vernon in Troup Co. on the Chattahoochee River, setting up the town, establishing a church and school, obtaining charters, and seeking to have it the county seat of Troup Co. He built a ferry there also, and today the only reminders of the town of Vernon are things like Vernon Road (originally Vernon Ferry Road) which led to Vernon from LaGrange. Wiley J. and Bethena B. Sterling had at least 9 children (names omitted here as some are believed to be in error). 2. Willis B. Sterling, b. 1800 Ga. Married 8-3-1831 Troup Co. to Mary, widow of Benjamin Baker.1 |
Marriage* | 3 Aug 1831 | He married Mary (?) at Troup Co., Georgia, on 3 Aug 1831.1 |
