- From Harris Hill, April 2002:
The date of birth is a subject of debate amongst Hill researchers. There are three birthdates supported by census, enlistments and other public documents. All indicate Valentine's Day, February 14th as the day, but the year is uncertain. 1839, 1842, and 1843 all have support. However, if one studies the birthdates of other Hill siblings (if they are correct) then 1842 becomes the only logical choice.
From Harris Hill,, April 2004:
"Hamp" Hill's date of birth is hotly contested. I have personally seen 5 five differnt dates, each having about the same weight in supporting documentation. I personally believe that even he didn't know his own birthdate. My personal favorite birth date is Dec. 13, 1842. It is the date he gave on his army enlistment and service record and it appears on his affidavit for pension years later.
