He was an older brother to Matthew Calbraith Perry. As a boy, he lived in South Carolina, sailing ships practicing for his future career as an officer in the US Navy. He served in the War of 1812 against Britain, and earned the title "Hero of Lake Erie" for leading American forces in a decisive naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. The city of Perrysburg, Ohio the borough of Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, as well as the village of Perrysburg, New York and its the surrounding township are all named after him.4 |

Eliza Boykin Rutherford, ca. 1785 - 20 Jul 1837, Aged 52 years, w/o Williams Rutherford, "only daughter of the late Francis Boykin", "formed with attributes and capacities ornamental to her sex". 2. Francis Boykin Rutherford, ca. 1807 - 8 Jul 1824, died in his 17th year of age. "A youth of great promise." Gravestone is fading and difficult to read. 3. Algernon Sidney Rutherford, ca. 1820 - 23 Sep 1826, d. in his 6th year of age. Insc: Aged 52 years. "This monument erected to the memory of Eliza Rutherford by her husband, Williams Rutherford. She was the only daughter of the late Francis Boykin. Exemplary as a wife, as a mother and formed with attributes and capacities ornamental to her sex."3,6 |

Biography* | | James helped establish Mercer University. He sSold his plantation to brother Samuel Boykin in 1829 and moved to Columbus about 1830. He was an early Deacon of the First Baptist Church at Columbus, GA. Lost nearly $100,000 by security debt. A friend caused his financial ruin (Baptist Encl. p. 132-125) In 1830, he was named Ambassador of Indian Affairs and was he was one of the first settlers in Russell Co., AL. Six of the first 12 deeds in the courthouse are from individual Creek Indians to James, approved by General Andrew Jackson. One tract was bought from Tukosasyoholo, under a treaty with the Creeks of 24 Mar 1832. In about 1834, James built his home at Rose Hill in Russell Co., AL. He had two sons: Francis E. Boykin, born 1814 and James Owen Boykin, born 7 Aug 1821. James Owen was a doctor and served as a surgeon in the CSA. He married Amanda Peirce, a niece of President Franklin Pierce. Biography* | | Obtuary: Services for Keith Culpepper, 68, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cadwell Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rentz Cemetery. Rev. Al Haywood, Rev. William W. Glosson Sr. and Rev. Tim Tanner will officiate. Mr. Culpepper was a lifelong resident of Laurens County. He was the son of the late J. C. Culpepper and the late Hettie Register Culpepper. He was retired from Laurens County Public Works after 28 years of service. Mr. Culpepper was preceded in death by his first wife, Dollie Joe Culpepper; a daughter, Donna Lynn Howell; and a brother, Terrell Simmons. He died Sunday (October 8, 2006). Survivors include his wife, Bessie Lou Culpepper of Dublin; his daughter, Denise Wood of Rentz; his son, Keith (Janie) Culpepper Jr. of Cadwell; his stepchildren, Jimmy (Deborah) Rogers of Dublin, Joette (Robbie) Harvey of Gray and Jean (Terry) Cannon of Dublin; his son-in-law, Freddie Howell of Rentz; his sister, Linda (Carl) Cox of Rentz; his grandchildren, Chasidy (Chris) Johnson, Joseph Wood, Kenneth Wood, Chris (Nichole) Culpepper, Julie (Mark) McDaniel, Jonathan Howell and Brandon Howell; his great-grandchildren, Makayla Johnson, Austin Johnson, Tyler Culpepper, Logan Culpepper and Kole McDaniel. Gary Frost, Harold Graham, Freddie Churchwell, D. M. Mullis, Steve Cox and Billy Wood will serve as pallbearers. The family will be at the Culpepper home, 2004 Stonewall Street, and will receive friends at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. Townsend Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.1 |
