Birth of Sonsay 1699 His son William Whitehead was born say 1699.
Death*after 1711 He died after 1711.
Biography* William Whitehead was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, about 1672. The date of his death is uncertain, but it was after 1711, since he was mentioned in his father's will as one of the legatees in 1710/11.
No records of William, or his wife or widow have been discovered after 1711, as of this writing. It is certain that he married and had at least three and possibly four sons. As early as 1723, the estate of William West was settled by Arthur Whitehead in Isle of Wight County. In 1726 Barnaby Thomas, the son of William Thomas of Isle of Wight, bought 250 acres of land from Lazarus Whitehead. Also an inventory was returned for the estate of Robert Whitehead of Surry County, Virginia, in 1731 It seems positive that Arthur and Lazarus were sons of William, and probable that Robert was also, for no records of any earlier Whiteheads in this area exist than those already given. The names of the first two, and those of their later descendants, further confirm their being the sons of William, The existence of another son is clear in the will of Arthur Whitehead dated 12 March 1744, in Southampton County, Virginia, wherein he mentions his brother William as one of the executors. This brother and another brother Lazarus were witnesses to this will.

Birth*say 1650 Arthur was born at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, say 1650.
Death of Fathersay 1655 His father Arthur Whitehead died say 1655.
Marriage*say 1671 He married Mary Godwin say 1671.
Birth of Sonsay 1672 His son William Whitehead was born say 1672 at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia
Death*say 1710 He died at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, say 1710.
Biography* Arthur Whitehead, was born about 1650 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and died there about 1710. He married Mary Godwin, the daughter of William Godwin (G. B. 2-52; W. & D. Bk. 2-528; C. -M-35)
The earliest presently known record of Arthur Whitehead, occurs 11 August 1673, when he gave some cows to his half-sister Rebecca Thornton, probably as a wedding present after her marriage to Stephen Horsefield. On 9 February 1687/8, he presented the inventory for the estate of Christopher Wade. Captain Thomas Godwin was one of the creditors of this estate. About 1696, William Strickland and his brother Mathew sold 200 acres of land to Arthur Whitehead, and this deed was attested by Barnaby MacQuinney, Jno. (X) Barrett, and John Worrell. Three years later, on 1 February 1699, William Strickland and his wife Oliffe sold another 150 acres to Arthur Whitehead, at-George Pierce's line, as attested by John Giles, John Chapman and Andrew Woodley. Sometime in 1704, he appraised the estate of John Cooke, along with George Pierce, William Johnson and John Bardin. The following year, on 9 April 1705, with William Johnson and Henry Pope, he was one of the appraisers of the estate of George Pierce. The last recorded reference to Arthur, occurs 30 March 1721, ten years after his death, when Richard Braswell patented 365 acres in Urah Meadows in Chowan County, N.C., on Arthur Whitehead's line and John Cotton's indicating that he had purchased lands in North Carolina before his death. No further records are found, either of himself or of his widow, but further study of the land records of Isle of Wight County might be fruitful.
In his will he made bequests to his son William, and wife Mary, the latter being named executrix. Philip Rayford, Philip Pierce, and Thomas Boone are named as witnesses, and the will is dated 11 January 1710/11, but no date is given for its recording (W. & D. Bk. 2-528; C-1-72-73.)1

Birth*say 1625 Arthur was born at England say 1625.
Marriage*before 1650 He married Katherine Ruffin at England before 1650.
Birth of Sonsay 1650 His son Arthur Whitehead Jr. was born say 1650 at Isle of Wight Co., Virginia
Death*say 1655 He died say 1655.
Biography* Arthur Whitehead was probably born in England about 1625, and came to Virginia sometime before 1643. He died about 1655, presumably in Isle of Wight County. His place of birth in England is not known at this time.
On 22 March 1643, he was listed as one of the Head Rights of Obedience Robins, who on that day received a patent for 450 acres in Northampton County, Virginia, bounded by a former devisement of the said Robins for the transportation of nine persons: John Coleman, Henry Edwards, Arthur Whitehead, Nicholas Every, John Ells, Henry Baston, Stephen Horse (probably Horsefield), Thomas Chapman, and John Carter. Of these it is interesting to note that all but two of the family names are subsequently found in the records of Isle of Wight County, which supports the conclusion that Arthur Whitehead, settled there. (C. P. 225)
Arthur died about 1655.2

Marriage*after 1920 She married George Yates at Riverside, Riverside Co., California, after 1920.
Married Nameafter 1920  As of after 1920, her married name was Yates.
Death*21 May 1941 She died at Riverside, Riverside Co., California, on 21 May 1941 at age 47.4
Biography* The following is from a Feb 2000 e-mail:
.
My name is Sandra Louise Schiffer Durbin. My Mother's name was Lornetta Inez Yates Taylor. Birth date 10/28/27 Death 1968.
.
My Grandmother's was Mary Ida Culpepper Yates. Birth and death dates not yet known.
.
My Great-Uncles and Great-Aunts were Wayan (Will) Culpepper, Mamie Culpepper Johns, Langston Culpepper, Zeola Culpepper Jones, Daniel Culpepper, Herbert Culpepper (half brother), Finley Culpepper (half brother) and an additional girl (half sister), name unknown, who died young.
.
My Great-Grandfather was Daniel Culpepper of Wilcox County. Birth 1858? Death date not yet known. My Great-Grandmother was Margaret Reid Culpepper. Birth and death dates
unknown. Daniel then married Amy Reid, Margaret's younger sister and had Herbert, Finley, and a girl, name unknown.
.
I have been researching my family history. I have come upon Erasmus Culpepper III., listed in the 1850 census of Wilcox County, Alabama. In interviewing the oldest remaining family members, I have come across some very interesting information.
.
Erasmus III. had a son by the name of Ernest, who was listed in the 1850 census as being a year old. According to my Great-Aunt Ethel Culpepper, who is still alive, and was married to my Great-Uncle Langston Culpepper, born in 1899 and who died in 1983, the name given to my cousin Ernest, son of Langston Culpepper, was given that name because of the same Ernest Culpepper listed in the 1850 Wilcox County census. My Uncle insisted on that names to honor the
white Ernest Culpepper for literally being my family's savior.
.
Apparently, according to my Great-Grandfather's story, it was Ernest Culpepper ( a white man) who moved my Great- Grandfather's family to the Lower Peachtree, Alabama property, near where some members of my family still live today. It was Ernest who took care of obtaining a house and land for my Great-Grandfather and his family. It was also Ernest who kept my Grandfather and his family safe from all harm. I believe that it was probably also Ernest Culpepper who bankrolled the
trip out to California for my Great-Grandfather and his entire family (except for the youngest, Mamie, who was in love, and ran off and got married so she could stay in Lower Peachtree, Alabama.
.
Where would former slaves get money to do all of that?
.
When Daniel Culpepper and his family arrived in California,in the early 1900s, we apparently had money and went on to become one of the more prosperous Black Families of Riverside County, California, and we are listed as such, in the County Historical records. My Grandmother, Mary Ida Culpepper Yates, owned several properties and businesses while she was alive. This was back in the late 1920s and1930s. After Mary (call by the name of Ida at this time) died, when my Mother was 13 years old, things went wrong (probably because of the depression). And although we still owned three residential lots, in the 50's and 60's, we were poor by today's standards.
.
One time, when I was talking to My Uncle Lank, back in the early 1980s, he told me that Daniel Culpepper (my Great-Grandfather), and his other brothers and sisters(?), did not have a "real Daddy". When I question him further, he said that all he knew was what his father said that his mother( my Great-Great- Grandmother) had told him. Unfortunately, My Uncle did not know, or could not remember his Grandmother's ( Daniel Culpepper's Mother) name.
.
What I know is that it was highly ir-regular for a slave owner to take such interest in his prior owned slaves. Why give my family land, a home, money, help us move to the Lower Peachtree property, while keeping our entire family safe (after the civil war, when it was very unsafe for people of color living away from a town) and then help us on to California.
.
My question is " Was Erasmus Culpepper III., the 32 year old of the 1850 census, my Great-Grandfather's Father and was Ernest Culpepper my Great-Grandfather's half-brother?
.
Why would the Culpepper family do all of that for someone who was "just" a former slave?
.
Was my Grandmother named after the 13 year old Mary Culpepper listed on the 1850 census?
.
I know that both my Great-Grandfather, with his family and his brother, with his family, all moved to California. Even at the turn of the century, it was probably not cheap to bring all of those people to California.
.
I should note that I was told that my Great-Grandfather had a light complexion, as did my Grandmother, as do I. I also have long hair , as my grandmother did. The lighter complexion does not happen with every generation. My deceased mother had, and my brother and sister have a dark complextion. I was married to an Irish man and our daughter does not look half and half, she looks more white than black.
.I find this all very interesting.

Death*24 Jan 1972 She died at Riverside, Riverside Co., California, on 24 Jan 1972 at age 87.3
Biography* The following is from Sandra Louise Schiffer Durbin, San Diego, CA, an 8 Feb 2000 e-mail:
.
I can not speak for other branches of black Culpeppers, but in my family, the hierarchy was strictly Matriarchal. My Great- Aunt, Zeola " Mama Jones" Culpepper Jones ran our entire family. Until she died, she sat at the head of the table at family gatherings. When there was a family decision to be made, Mama Jones had the final say so.
.
When I was a little girl, Mama Jones would loan me out to the old
ladies in the neighborhood (when they would be left at home alone overnight), and I stayed with my Aunt Edna several times. She taught me how to make rag hooked rugs, and tried to teach me the piano. I now wish I had written down all the stories I heard as a child. Some of the women I stayed with had actually been slaves and I listened to the stories like they were from a story book, instead of realizing how important the stories of their lives were.
