Sir John Culpeper7a
held Oxen Hoath during the reign of Henry IV. He is buried, with
his wife Katherine, in West Peckham
Church. He was succeeded by
his son, Sir William8a, who was Sheriff of Kent in
1426. Sir John and Katherine had two other sons: John Culpeper8a
of Oxnode [probably a variation of Oxen Hoath] and Peter Culpeper8a who held lands
at Headcorn, including Bletchenden. Sir William Culpeper8a
had three sons: Richard Culpeper9a of Oxen Hoath who
was Sheriff in 1484, William Culpeper9a of Preston
Hall, and Geoffrey Culpeper9a. Sir Richard had no
sons, and at his death in 1484, Oxen Hoath Manor passed to
Richard's three daughters: (1) Margaret Culpeper, wife of William
Cotton of Oxen Hoath; (2) Joyce Culpeper, wife of Edmund Lord
Howard (one of their daughters was Catherine Howard, fifth wife of
Henry VIII); and (3) Elizabeth Culpeper, wife of Henry Barham,
Esq. Upon division of the inheritance, Oxen Hoath was allotted to
William Cotton, in right of his wife Margaret Culpeper. (Hasted's Kent,
Vol. V, pp. 63-64) As of 2000, Oxen Hoath is being
run as a retreat center. For more information, see the Oxen Hoath.
