Region of the Texas Panhandle, Deaf Smith
County was formed in 1876 (organized 1890) from 
Bexar and 
Young 
County. Its county seat, Hereford, 
is about 40 miles SW of Amarillo and 90 miles NNW of Lubbock. Deaf Smith is bordered 
by the Texas counties of Oldham, Randall,
Castro and Parmer, and the New Mexico 
counties of Quay and Curry.
