Pasquotank County
County History and Geography
In the Outer Coastal Plan and the northeastern corner of the North
Carolina, Pasquotank County was formed
as early as 1668 as a precinct of Albemarle County.
Elizabeth City, its county seat, is on US-17, about
40 miles south of
Norfolk, Virginia. Pasquotank is bordered by the counties of
Perquimans, Gates, and Camden, and by the
Albemarle Sound.

Claire Love Culpepper Bennett
(b 21 Oct 1927), 68, of the 1700 block of Crescent Drive (Elizabeth
City), died at
Guardian Care Nursing Home on Sunday, Nov. 12, 1995. Born in
Elizabeth City, she was a retired administrative secretary for the
Pasquotank County public school. She was a member of First United
Methodist Church, former member of the Junior Women's Club and
former district president of N.C.A.E.O.P. Mrs. Bennett was the
daughter of the late Marion Culpepper and Margarette
Foreman Love Culpepper and wife of Charles T. Bennett II
of the home. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter,
Nancy B. Aneralla of Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y.; two
sons, Charles T. Bennett III of Greenville, S.C., and David C.
Bennett of Elizabeth City; one sister, Mary Blades Love Brown of
Pinehurst, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Amanda Claire Aneralla of
Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y. A memorial service will be
held at Twiford's Memorial Chapel at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be
in Old Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to First United Methodist Church. (13 Nov 1995, The Virginian-Pilot.)

 The Culpepper Inn
(B&B), Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC. "The Culpepper Inn, a large brick Colonial
Revival style house, situated on historic West Main Street in Elizabeth City, was
constructed for William and Alice Culpepper in 1935. The property was restored, renovated
and turned into an inn in 1993. On entering the inn one steps back into a bygone era of
quite luxury, elegance and southern hospitality. The 11 bedrooms, all individually
decorated, have private bathrooms (some with double tubs), telephones, central air and
heat, ceiling fans and cable television."

Culpepper Connection: This was the home of William Thomas
Culpepper (1884-1945) and his wife Alice Gwendolin Butler
(1884-1973). They were the parents of the North Carolina
politician, Levin B. Culpepper and the grandparents of North
Carolina legislator, Bill Culpepper. William was the son of
Leroy C. Culpepper, son of Accountis Culpepper. |

Culpepper Lane
(State Road 1346), Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC
Culpepper Connection: If you travel on Highway 17 North from
Elizabeth City, NC, turn right on Culpepper Lane into what is now
Pine Lakes subdivision. Culpepper Lane
veers right on Quail Run Road. Take an immediate left on Hunter's
Trail West. At the end of this street you will find a heavily
wooded lot and the graves and tombstones
of William Culpepper, 1845 - 1882,
and his wife, Virginia M. Dunbar, 1856
- 1921. The son of Accountis Culpepper,
William was the uncle of William Thomas Culpepper who built the
Culpepper Inn (above). On William's
tombstone: "WM. CULPEPPER, CO. B., 21ST
CONN. INF.", and on Virginia's:
"VIRGINIA M. CULPEPPER, Born Nov. 27,
1856, Died Feb. 14, 1921".
This was once farmland and is close to the Pasquotank River.
Culpepper Lane is presumably named for this branch of the
