County History and Geography

In the Outer Coastal Plan and the northeastern corner of the North Carolina, Camden County was formed in 1777 from Pasquotank County. Camden, its county seat, is on US-158, about 40 miles south of Norfolk, VA. Camden is bordered on the north by the old Norfolk County, Virginia, on the south by the Albemarle Sound, on the east by Currituck County (NC), and on the west by Pasquotank and Gates counties (NC).

In May 1788, Henry Culpepper, Sr. (IV) sold Culpepper's Island to his son Thomas Culpepper, with his sons Peter Culpepper, Joshua Culpepper, and Henry Culpepper as witnesses (Currituck Deed Bk 5-330). Peter is buried in the Culpepper Cemetery on McPherson Road #1231, Sharon Community, South Mills, NC. He was a builder of Culpepper Locks on the Dismal Swamp Canal.

In Oct 1815 Henry Culpepper Sr. (IV) sold Culpepper's Island to Warren Culpepper, 50 acres for 50 pounds. Witnesses were Tamer Culpepper and James Culpepper (Camden Co, NC Deed Bk Q-111). In Feb 1834 Warren Culpepper sold the island to Nicholas Wilkins of Norfolk, for $20 (Camden Deed Bk U-343).
