Lamar County
County History
Lamar
County was created in 1904 from the Marion and
Pearl River Counties. It received its name
in honor of US Supreme Court Justice L.Q.C. Lamar. As of 2000, Lamar
County's population was 39,070. While it is part of the Hattiesburg,
Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area, Lamar is largely a rural
county. Purvis is its county seat. Hattiesburg is home to The University
of Southern Mississippi, originally known as Mississippi Normal College.
Just south of Hattiesburg is Camp Shelby, the largest National Guard
training base east of the Mississippi River. Other towns include
Lumberton, Sumrall and West Hattiesburg. Lamar County is bordered by
Covington County (north),
Forrest County (east),
Pearl River County (south),
Marion County (west) and
Jefferson Davis County (northwest).
