History

In the Lower Coastal Plains Region of Georgia, Chatham County was formed in 1777 as an original county. It was previously organized in 1758 as the Parishes of St. Philip and Christ Church from lands of the Creek cession of 1733. Its county seat, Savannah, is on I-16 and I-95 about 250 miles southeast of Atlanta. Chatham is on the Atlantic Ocean and bordered by the Georgia counties of Effingham and Bryan, and the South Carolina counties of Jasper and Beaufort.
