Franklin County
History
Franklin County was
formed in 1818 from Indian lands and in 1867 its northern half was split off as
Colbert county. It is situated in the northwestern
part of the state with its western half in the Southeastern Plains Region and
its eastern half on the Interior Plateau. Franklin is bordered by
Colbert, Lawrence,
Winston, and Marion counties
in Alabama, and by Tishomingo and Itawamba counties in Mississippi. The county
seat was variously in Russellville, Frankfort, and Belgreen before being
relocated back to Russellville in 1891. Other towns and communities include Red
Bay and Phil Campbell. Russellville is on US-43, about 20 miles south of
Florence, 70 miles WSW of Huntsville and
100 miles northwest of Birmingham.
