Marion County
History
Marion County was
formed in 1818 from Indian lands. It is situated in the northwestern part of the
state with its western half in the Southeastern Plains Region and its eastern
half on the Interior Plateau. Marion is bordered by Franklin,
Winston, Walker,
Fayette and Lamar counties, and by the Mississippi counties of Itawamba and
Monroe. The county seat is Hamilton. Other significant towns include Winfield,
Brilliant and Hackleburg. Hamilton is on US-78 about 90 miles northwest of
Montgomery and 100 miles southwest of Huntsville.
