History

The Mississippi territorial legislature created Clarke County in 1812, and it became part of Alabama when that territory was formed in 1817. A county seat was not established until 1820, when it was located at Clarksville. In 1831, the seat was moved to Grove Hill. Clarke County, located in the southwestern portion of the state in the Southeastern Plains Region, is at the juncture of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers. A center of the state's timber industry. Clarke is bordered by the counties of Marengo, Wilcox, Monroe, Baldwin, Washington and Choctaw. Grove Hill is on US-43, about 75 miles north of Mobile and 100 miles southwest of Montgomery.
