Monroe County
History
Monroe County was formed in 1815 from the Creek Session of the previous year. It
was reduced in size by the creation of the Alabama counties of
Montgomery (1816), Conecuh
(1818) and
Wilcox (1819). Monroe is located in the southwestern part of the state, in the Piney
Woods section of the Southeastern Plains Region. Its county seat is Monroeville. Other towns include Beatrice,
Peterman and Frisco City. Monroeville is 85 miles northeast of Mobile and 90
miles southwest of Montgomery. Monroe County is bordered by
Wilcox, Butler, Conecuh,
Escambia, Baldwin and
Clarke counties.
